Florida football player Jamar Hornsby was arrested Friday morning in Alachua County for allegedly using the credit card of a person who has been dead for almost seven months. Hornsby, 21, turned himself over to authorities and appeared in Alachua County court. He was released later on his own recognizance. Hornsby, who faces two charges -- misdemeanor larceny and third-degree fraud -- was issued a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day until his next court date. Later Friday, Florida coach Urban Meyer officially released Hornsby from the team. ''He is not a part of our program,'' Meyer said in a statement. Hornsby allegedly had been using a BP gas card owned by James Slonina and used by his daughter, Ashley Slonina, a Florida student who was killed in a motorcycle accident along with UF football player Michael Guilford on Oct. 12 of last year. James Slonina told Alachua County police that he believed Hornsby obtained the card on Oct. 13 while helping Ashley Slonina's family remove her belongings from her apartment after she died.

Jamar Hornsby = Disgusting piece of #2.

Despicable ****. Urban Meyer and his thug players are jokes.

He almost went to Michigan! Was even offered the #1 jersey. He just knew he'd be out of his criminal element if he went to A2. But, the kid does demonstrate SEC speed as it was pretty quick after the death he started to use the credit card!

Feed him to the gators is what should be his punishment.

Holy crap, he used the card the day after she died. Why did it take so long to realize the card was still being used. It's frigging May, I think, I just woke up.

May 10, 2008  09:51 AM ET

This is very very sad. No way am I excusing this kid for this despicable act. But take a look here. The NCAA rakes in the cash, college presidents care more about money than academics (as proven by the recent DI play-off talks breakdown), and these players/students help make these institutions the big money.
And some of them attempt to pull off acts like this to have money of their own. There is something wrong here not only with this kid and others who have made equally poor choices with money, but with the NCAA and college presidents who still make the money.

That comes off half apologetic. Don't make excuses for this man. He stole a dead girl's gas card while ostensibly helping organize her belongings. Think about it. It's atrocious.

It gives me a headache just thinking about it. That and 700 beers last night.

I am convinced that the crime rate is considerably higher among athletes compared to the general public. It's sad that it would be so easy to list an ALL-CRIMINAL team of football players.....and that there would be so many names on the list, that not all named would "make the team." Oh, and what a surprise....his name is Jamar.

May 10, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Alfred,

ever heard the saying "you can take the kid outta the hood but you can't take the hood outta the kid?"

Unfortunately, many of these star athletes forgot to practice morality and ethics while growing up. I also wonder if many of these kids came from fatherless homes growing up.

May 10, 2008  10:42 AM ET

that is about as bad as it gets

May 10, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Give Meyer "credit" for doing the right thing and distancing himself from this punk and booting him off the team.

May 10, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Wow, that may be one of the lowest things I've ever heard a person do. You got to have some serious balls to do something like that.

May 10, 2008  11:05 AM ET

It's not about having balls, it's about having no morals whatsoever. Total worthless piece of crap.

May 10, 2008  11:12 AM ET

maybe the cops planted the card on him

i mean cops are so racist you know

May 10, 2008  11:24 AM ET

I hope that they kick this human trash off the team.

Its not testicular fortitude, its greed, lack of conscience, psychopathology and a criminal mind with narcisscism carrying the day. He thinks he is smarter than everyone, thinks ONLY of himself and he used the death of innocents to buy gasoline. Well this is Florida, and we know how pleasant Florida prisons are...Enjoy the green stamps from your gas purchases, Jamargarbage.

May 10, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Last week he was a member of the Florida Gators. In a few months, he will be a member of Mean Machine.

May 10, 2008  11:57 AM ET

OMG this is one of the worse things I've ever read. Don't the Florida boosters pay these guys enough for gas? Seriously, the parents are obviously devestated, and don't need to be bothered with stuff like this.

This is why I condone prison rape!
