Big Ten schools calling App State
Posted: Monday May 12, 2008 05:39AM ET
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that Appalachian State, which pulled a shocking 34-32 upset at then-No. 5 Michigan last season, is getting calls from Big Ten schools looking for an edge over the Wolverines. Coach Jerry Moore, the genius behind Appalachian State's three straight national championships has been receiving numerous phone calls. The favorite topic: ASU's spread offense, which is based on Urban Meyer's Utah model but involves nuances that Moore's staff learned while visiting West Virginia as guests of Coach Rich Rodriguez.

Whats worse losing to App St. on a flukish type of a day, or calling them for coaching guidance?
Seems not everyone is so sure Michigan is going to roll over for them this year...

Nothing, actually. But be honest, if you saw someone rip on UM for losing to App State would you turn around and say whats wrong with that, look at their record?
Please football gods, let them beat LSU.

Report Offensive CommentKind of pointless now isn't it? Given how Michigan is changing its system?

Report Offensive CommentBim, in past threads I have defended Michigans loss to Appy State. They might be D2 but they're good. Can't argue with it.
Truth - not pointless. They have a formula that works and it involves knowledge learned from RR himself per the last sentence of the paragraph.

Report Offensive CommentLet App beat up on Oh State.......this year. Please Santa.

Report Offensive CommentApp State is an excellent disciplined team. Sure, UM haters like to forget that App St has done something on other DIV 1 team has ever done and won 3 straight NC in their lower Div. And other big 10 coaches calling the Coach of that team is evidence that other coaches understand that to and don't see App St's win some fluke. You aren't gong to see SEC teams calling Louisiana Monroe to find out how to beat Alabama. But let these other big 10 teams call because this UM team isn't your the UM that your good ol' dad knows and loves. This new UM is going to shake the big 10 with a playing style that is going to make coaches RIP OUT THEIR HAIR in frustration and make some teams wish that Carr never retired.

Knowing how it runs is also knowing how to defense it better.

Report Offensive CommentLike biminator said it was a freakish day; that is why yuo don't see PAC 10 schools calling Harbaugh at Stanford on how to beat USC. These thing happen, don;t change your coaching style and hope for the same results. Unless your coaching style sucks

Report Offensive CommentWhy are teams still calling App State on how to beat Michigan? They have a new coach and are entering into a new era!

Report Offensive CommentGeorge:
I'm talking more about the defensive side. Michigan's archaic slow defensive scheme under Coach Carr is what got them beat by App. St. That is changing along with the spread offense.
THE TRUTH | 05/12/08, 11:30 AM
Report Offensive CommentWhen I read the headline, I thought they were trying to schedule some home-in-home series with App. St. None of them are interested in playing them? I wonder why?

Report Offensive CommentThe App State coaches would probably be able to offer better advice on how to defend the spread option than on how to beat Michigan. Rodriguez has implemented his spread option offense at Michigan, an offense similar to App State.

Report Offensive CommentArejaydub,
I don't think you will see ANY other Big 10 school putting App St on their schedule. UM was foolish to do so and we saw why. The funny thing is that, from what I have heard, UM was looking at playing Hawaii but didn't cuz it would have meant them flying out to HI and that was a trip they didn't want to take so they opted for ASU.

Same reason teams bailed on Hawaii last year. On the other hand, I'm not sure App St would catch a big school like Michigan by suprise again.

Hawaii, and they didn't go? That's a wonderful trip the kids would've loved to take. The could've toured the island, Pearl Harbor, etc...Better that than to get your arse handed to you in front of the home crowd of 100K+ rabid fans.
