Cubs to sign Edmonds, demote Pie
Posted: Tuesday May 13, 2008 06:24AM ET
The Cubs appear poised to sign veteran center fielder Jim Edmonds soon after he clears waivers Wednesday. That would mean a demotion to the minors for touted prospect Felix Pie, who entered Monday with a .222 average and strikeouts in one-third of his plate appearances. The lefty-hitting Edmonds and right-handed Reed Johnson would share center-field duties.

Were Cubs scouts paying attention to Edmonds in San Diego? Pie's .222 BA is pretty good compared to what Edmonds was doing.

Report Offensive CommentAs much as I love Edmonds game I would not do this deal and demote Pie...he just needs ABs and patience. Wisely the Cubs hierarchy seems all to ready to be patient....*rolls eyes*

Report Offensive CommentI'd give the prospect a chance rather than a guy who hasn't hit over .260 in the last 3 years. They are wasting money signing Edmonds.

Report Offensive Commenthahaha they arent wasting money...pie aint doing anything and the only reason why im laughing is because i thought reed johnson could fill center duties...myabe edmons is a better fit defensively otherwise idk why they're getting him...murton, pie, johnson, fukudome...they can all play center a certain point

Report Offensive CommentRelax, Cards fans.
This could be one of the best things to happen for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008.

Report Offensive CommentAnd what makes you think Edmonds is going to do any better since Pie is actually hitting better than Edmonds and it has been widely reported that Edmonds was not doing a good job defensively in CF.

Report Offensive CommentI agree CardsFan2.....there's just something wrong with him wearing that ugly Cubs uni. I don't think he will help them much, it's just such a bad thought to think of him with the Cubs.

Report Offensive CommentI think he can still play a good defense but I don't know how much he has left in the tank on offense.

Report Offensive CommentC Note, when was the last time you saw him play D? Did you see him at all this year. Even the Pads said he wasn't making plays on fly balls that he would have made in the past.

Report Offensive CommentAn old cancer.... just what the Cubs need to go with the collection they've got now..... Edmunds will destroy the club house, suck (badly) on the field and be cut in mid season....

That is why I said good defense and not great defense. He is not what he used to be by any accords but he can still make enough plays out there. His offense will be the liability for whatever team signs him though.

Report Offensive CommentI see where the Cubs are coming from though. They think with their line-up that he will be better. I personally don't see it. There is a reason why the Cards saw him off in the offseason and why the Padres left him. There just is not much left there and I hate to say this about a player I really liked when he was with the Cards.
