Why San Jose fired Wilson
Posted: Tuesday May 13, 2008 06:56AM ET
The Sharks' failure to advance any closer to a Stanley Cup title this season than in their previous two cost Coach Ron Wilson his job Monday. "Sometimes the class needs a new professor and sometimes the professor needs a new class," General Manager Doug Wilson said after declaring his dissatisfaction with the team's third straight second-round exit. An active search for the team's eighth head coach will begin immediately, the general manager said, and won't be limited to candidates with NHL experience.

And the carousel continues. The question is, will anyone else be able to get anything more out of Big Joe who becomes an ordinary Joe in the playoffs?

Report Offensive CommentThe Sharks should have clean house. Not just get rid of Ron Wilson, the head coach, but also Doug Wilson, the GM. Also the Sharks need to think about getting rid of some their star players starting with Joe Thornton, who is the A-Rod of the NHL. Thornton puts up great regular season stats, but comes up small and SOFT in the playoffs.

It's Thornton,...definitely Thorton's fault

Report Offensive CommentIts definately No-Show-Joe Thorntons fault. He doesnt have the HEART to lead his team to the promised land. Boston benifitted from that trade long term. We got Sturm,Kobasew,Ference,Lucic, and Kessel from that trade.(the latter 2 from the 2006 draft cause we sucked that year Joe was traded). Thank you Joe!!!

Report Offensive Commenthahahha i hate this guy...such a arrogant ****...."my record speaks for itself, im the best in the league bar none"...yes it does ron and now you dont have a job cause your team sucks in the playoffs and should be in the finals every year
volcomstoner180 | 05/13/08, 12:15 PM
Report Offensive CommentIs that even a question? San Jose is nto the Leafs. The organization wants the cup bad. You can have near President;s Trophy performances 3 years in a row, if your team goes out by the backdoor every single playoff year, you're gone. San Jose lineup is impressive but they lack the will to win whatever it takes that the Stars, Red Wings and other temas in the West clearly have.
Wilson is a good coach if he gets a Captain with real leadership skills (Morrow in Dallas, Sakic in Colorado, Doan in Phoenix, ...). He'll find a job quickly.

Report Offensive CommentHe'll likely not have to wait long for a job, but I don't think he's as much of a shoo-in as many believe. This post-season really damaged his credibility a great deal. Not only did his team pi&& away another great shot at the Cup, thanks to his lack of being able to motiviate them, but he also had a rift with his GM over the youth issue mentioned, and, of course, his ridiculous quote that volcomstoner180 referred to. That quote, by the way, ended with him saying he is happy with his results and the team should be "rejoicing" for what it has accomplished in his tenure.
He's an egomaniac, clearly, That is a very difficult attitude for players to deal with, and he showed that this team full of stars wouldn't listen to him. So does he go to a team with youth, and help them grow? Or does he go to the top of the list of potential hires for team like the Avs? Something tells me the Sens won't be knocking down his door - they already have enough experience with coaches who can't get them over the hump

Report Offensive CommentDid he actually say that volcomstoner180?The best? The best at what? Tanking great teams in the play-offs? The best at not winning any Cups with the teams he had? The best?Hahhahahahahahaha. He hasnt won jack...and he's saying sh--it like that? Who's gonna want him anyway? Nobody!!
bostongm | 05/13/08, 12:35 PM
Report Offensive Commentyes he did say that...but maybe im just a "negative canadian" haha...another great quote by the canned man himself
i bet his team is rejoicing they dont have to deal with him for another year..i could go on about this guy, and about the stories from players where in between periods he wrote 3 guys names on the drawing board (i think it was michalek, carle and someone else) and said " we need these players to be better"....wow great coaching...what a d i c k

Report Offensive CommentI just read an article on his firing and the entire thing is laced with 'I' and 'Me' and what I did for this team.
Direct quotes from the story;
"The only thing the team can do better, apparently, is win the Stanley Cup," Ron Wilson said.
"I can't control guys falling down," Ron Wilson said, remembering the decisive goal in San Jose's Game 2 loss to Dallas, which was set up by Joe Pavelski's pratfalling turnover to Brad Richards. "I can't control bounces in the playoffs.
Apparently? The line up you had and you couldn't lead them past the 2nd round? Blaming your players is pretty weak as well. That was Game 2, you could have had 4 more chances to fix it.
I disagree with the post saying that Doug Wilson needs to go. What more can a GM do to put together an elite team? He's done his job very well. Aside from thinking Ron Wilson could take them all the way. Mistake fixed...

Report Offensive CommentThe guy couldn't win with that lineup. He's right to be fired and gone along with his sarcastic remarks.
Joe will rise up under the right coach, no question.
And bostongm...your Bruins still suck.

Report Offensive CommentOh, and I hope the Sharks hire Pat Burns instead of him going to the Avs, which I had said should happen a couple days ago. This is already a fairly defensive team, so the fit would go well, if you ask me. Add to that the fact that Burnsie was Thornton's first Big League coach - who got fired in large part for not pushing Thornton's development more - and you have a good idea, in my mind anyway. Alot of people credit Burns' handling of Thornton for the way he plays now - at least in the regular season...
goCanada! is a happy man! | 05/13/08, 01:40 PM
Report Offensive CommentHahahahahaha....i think baun-ded gets too sensitive when i bash Jumbo Joe. Baun-ded....he's an OVER-RATED player that CANT get it done in the play-offs. And IF my Bruins suck..........what does that make the Laffs?Thats just TOO easy there Baun-ded. Grow a pair now and and please change your tampon.

Report Offensive Commenti have to agree no show joe is overrated....great in regular season, now if he would hit and play with some emotion then he would have some playoff sucess....maybe joe thornton is secretly euro born

Report Offensive CommentRon Wilson did a great job, the sharks have never won so many games. To young for the playoffs, Sharks defense was great only gave up 2 goals in many playoff games they lost. Sharks management only wants to make money or they would have spent the 10 million they are under the CAP and got some more first or second line players who could score a goal. 10 million will get you a couple of very good players. Sharks have to may third and fourth line players they play on the second line. What a price to pay make 10 million and l;ose in the playoffs. They dug there own grave.
