Red Wings assistant on Avs list?

If you can't beat 'em, raid 'em. Detroit assistant coach Todd McLellan came off the ice after the Red Wings' game-morning skate Monday at the American Airlines Center and was about to step into the visiting dressing room when I, well, ambushed him. I asked McLellan, in his third season with Detroit, if he would be interested in the Colorado coaching job, vacant since the Avalanche and Joel Quenneville parted ways Friday. "I would be very interested," McLellan, 40, said several hours before the Wings beat the Dallas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals.

Everybodys looking for a winning coach but they should at least let him finish the season. Go Wings!

Report Offensive CommentThat's dirty-pool. Frigging media, sticking their nose where it doesn't belong. This isn't even the Avs talking to him, its a f***ing reporter for ch***t's sake. They have no businees asking active coaches at this point of the playoffs about interest in coaching other teams. How is this an acceptable practice? The teams can't ask yet, but reporters can? Show some couth, ask the question after the team is hanging up their skates for the season, not while they are trying to get through to the Finals. What a piss off this article is

Report Offensive CommentNo worries goC as soon as Babcock gets wind of this the reporter will be watching the rest of the season from a downtown bar. Take a deep breath man....wings in 4!!!!

Report Offensive CommentAfter trhee years as an assistant coach in Detroit, McLellan deserves to get a good look from somebody. He'll be a good coach, Colorado or elsewhere.

Report Offensive CommentIts not that its against the Wings, it goes back to a comment I made last week about decency in the media, I'm just sick of them getting involved in things they have no business getting involved in. There has to be some way of regulating the bulls**t that the media keeps pulling.

Report Offensive CommentHow is this indescent?
I mena sure, he should of waited a bit, but in no way is this violating Mclellans rights or personal business.
Last week i agreed with you on the reporters should have respect!
But c'mon GoC, all the reporter did was ask a question, if Mclellan didnt want to answer it he would of said no comment, or talk to me after the year! Instead, he answered i would love it!
That is no ones fault except his!
Bring on Mclellan, he will be good for us!

Report Offensive CommentIt is inappropriate, not indecent, to create distractions in an organization (that just eliminated Colorado) currently playing in the Western Conference Finals by asking a question like this.
I hate reporters who pull crap like this, undoubtedly to try to create news where none exists.

Report Offensive CommentI agree with GoC and Parrothead, not just inappropriate but classes as well. Another example of trying to create news, the age we live in. It's why I barely pay any attention to the news. They're like a bunch of Sean Avery's.

Report Offensive CommentYeah I was definitely surprised to see that Terry Frei had done this, but even more surprised that Maclellan had gone ahead and said that he would be interested. Terry's been around a long time, he writes for the Post and ESPN, so I guess that means he can get away with it. I don't know how I feel about this one either. The Avs like to keep it in the family. The coach of the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters is probably more likely, but I guess we'll see.

Report Offensive CommentIt's gonna take more than a coach to get the Avs going. They keep bringing back the same old, tired, skaters. Forsberg, Foote, they're done. Like the Dominator in Detroit, you gotta know when to fold them.

now there is the truth... I was so sick of hearing how the AV's were so hurt and banged up....wouldn't have mattered...they'd have gotten swept anyway or at most won 1 game. A coach can't cure terminal AGE and inept play, no matter who he is
mhwings | 05/14/08, 02:20 PM
Report Offensive Commentwhy is mclellan a better coaching option then quennville was?,this avalanche organization better pick a direction that they would like to head in, they brought back a lot of old veterans from past glory years and it didn't work for them ( why don't you just bring back rob blake while your at it ) so now that it's not going to work next year either when everybody's a year older this organization better decide where they're headed or this could turn out to be a disaster regardless of who's coahing, mclellan would only benefit here if this where a youth movement!

Report Offensive CommentAs an Avs fan, this is great. This Detroit team was super impressive against us, and killing the others, most in the top ten rankings. The next series will be the most challenging for sure, but let the wings finish before talking about this.
and I agree with:

But we have lots of potential: stasny, wolski, svatos (if healthy). hlinka, jones. cumiskey... These guys will be legit in a couple years... we just need young defenseman for sure!

Report Offensive CommentI just realized that I think I'm all for bringing in McLellan. First off, the Avs don't keep bringing in has-beens. It happened this year. That's it. And it was only two old guys, plus Footer's still got some left. As far as McLellan, he runs the Detroit PP, which we need a TON of help on, and it could definitely be good. 2nd, he comes from Detroit, so he'll have a perspective on how to play that system and how to defend against it. Plus he might talk the Avs into drafting European players (there's only 4 Avs draft picks from Europe on the roster). Bring him in here.
wtnelson | 05/14/08, 04:04 PM
Report Offensive CommentIt's more McLellan's fault... He should have said something like, "I respect the Avalanche organization, but we're in the middle of the playoffs now so I need to focus on winning. I would be glad to talk about it after the playoffs are over." I hope this doesn't become a distraction in the clubhouse.
