Gretzky: I'm not taking Leafs job
Posted: Thursday May 15, 2008 07:49AM ET
Wayne Gretzky quieted talk yesterday about The Great One leaving Phoenix to become president of the Maple Leafs. "I am the coach of the Coyotes and part owner ... as much as I love Canada and the Toronto Maple Leafs, I have no interest in selling my stakes and leaving the Coyotes," Gretzky said in an email last night. Steve Yzerman's name also entered the fray in MLSE's GM search as a candidate to be Gretzky's GM in Toronto, but was also dismissed.

Report Offensive CommentI bet Gretz Pi**ed his pants laughing after the reporter left.I wish the star would say where this "rumour" started cuz i dont think it ever was started except for a reporter making it up. Lemme see....stay in Phoenix where i have a good thing going or go to Toronto and tarnish my legacy forever...hmmm...tough choice.

Report Offensive CommentIs there anyone in the entire hockeyworld that hasn't been connected to a staff-job with the Leafs this year? Bowman, Holland, Yzerman, Gretzky, Nonis, Burke, Lamoriello... and so on and so on...
Seriously, round it up...

Report Offensive CommentWho in their right mind would want that job? Its more hopeless than being the manager of the Orioles.

Report Offensive CommentWhy would Gretzky leave a team that he partly owns? haha

Report Offensive CommentAll the inept fat cats in upper management need to resign before any decent candidates will even consider a job in that disfunctional organization.
Unfortunately, as long as Leafs fans continue to dutifully hand over their hard earned cash and as long as they continue to accept mediocrity, nothing will change.
When Leafs fans abandon their "sheep" mentality and stay away in droves, like they did in Chicago, nothing will change!
The power to change rests in the hands of Leaf fans! Do they have the will to pull it off?

Report Offensive CommentYeah this is pretty stupid. Like anybody is gonna own one team and coach another. Quenneville will be the coach in Toronto, and Brian Burke or Dave Nonis will be the GM.

Report Offensive CommentDC, I'd say the Hockey market in Chicago is just a tad different than in Toronto. The "Sheep Mentality" you speak of is actually called being loyal, and sorry if the Leaf fans don't want to stop watching their team simply to make a point.
The fans in Chicago didn't stay away to make a point, they stayed away because they didn't give a rats **** about their team, that is until they got some good players.
Showing up to games isn't accepting mediocrity, it's supporting your team. And please point me to the fans that are accepting this crap, because from what I've read from some of the Leaf fan posters, they are none to happy with the situation right now.
Bentley00 - Welcome Schenner | 05/15/08, 11:34 AM
Report Offensive CommentYeah that's a good point Bentley. It's pretty stupid to call someone a sheep simply for supporting their team. I mean, I know you want them to win, but it's not a "sheep" mentality to be a fan.
wtnelson | 05/15/08, 11:47 AM
Report Offensive CommentWell Bentley a bit yes and a bit no. The Leafs sell out because of the huge corporate support. You'd be hard pressed to find seats with the same people always in them. The days of a dad and his son grabbing some tickets and heading to a game are long gone.Remember the lockout was going to fix ticket prices? Not!! I took my son to a Leafs/Sens game with free tickets and it still set me back a buck fifty..parking etc. So a lot of it isnt loyalty its just that off chance that you can get tickets every couple years....so you go.
Peter Goezinya | 05/15/08, 11:51 AM
Report Offensive CommentI see your point Pete, but the corporate fans are still fans (maybe not as diehard) And just because Johnny Rich can afford to go see a game doesn't make him any less of a fan, and he certainly doesn't deserve to be called a "sheep" for simply supporting his team.
Most of the blue-collar Leaf fans watch the Marlies anyways live, and watch the Leafs on T.V. Should they be called Sheep for supporting the Leafs farm team, or for paying a few dollars a month for Leafs TV? Not a chance.

Report Offensive CommentI would have to agree with Bentley,
How can a loyal fan be called a sheep!
I am sure for which ever team you cheered for, if they had a few bad years in a row you would stick with them! or so most of us would hope! however there is a term for people out there, its called a bandwagon Jumper!
I give the leafs fans credit, for sticking it through the rough years!
Dont forget, not 5 years ago, the leafs where one of canadas best chance to bring the cup north! When they were good, they were good!
GO LEAF FANS!

Report Offensive CommentAnd there is one good thing about leaf fans,
there not Philly fans who wine, and moan about every little bad thing in there careers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NixonFire | 05/15/08, 12:33 PM
Report Offensive CommentThis article is completely fabricated. Gretzky is and was not even being considered for the position. It was made up by a journalist looking for something to write about.
