Duval tries relaxed approach
Posted: Friday May 16, 2008 07:57AM ET
David Duval was rubbing the middle-age mound that has bloomed beneath his golf shirt, saying he had a good 20 pounds to lose. But not here," (patting a thigh). "Or here," (backside). Never again is he going to mess with the foundation, he said. Duval's come to the same conclusion as a lot of other 36-year-old men: He's not going to be a slave to the weight room ever again. He says he is serious about re-acquiring a champion's game. Specifically, Puggy Blackmon stepped aside as the South Carolina golf coach last season to begin working more with Duval and some other select pupils. Also, Duval has picked back up again with Atlanta instructor George Kelnhofer, who is trying to restore the swing as he knew it 18 years ago. Despite no tangible signs of improvement, both Blackmon and Duval say he is much closer to a breakthrough than people may know. And when asked if he has any shot of making the $785,000 he'd need to make this year to retain his Tour card for next season, Duval expresses no doubt.

I'd like to see get his card back. A little more character couldn't hurt the PGA Tour.

Report Offensive CommentDuval has character - as in personality. Surely you jest!
Duval in his prime was even more dull, unsmiling and unpersonable than Vijay Singh. I liked Duval's game, just as I like Vijay's, but neither of them has any charisma.

Report Offensive CommentI would just like him to get his game back. How can someone fall so far off the map like he did?

Report Offensive CommentThis guy is a head case. He never recovered from his girlfriend dumping his country ****. His big thrill in life is some other guys kids call him dad. That this guy was no.1 in the world before Eldrick showed up , shows how pitiful golf was before woods showed up.

Report Offensive CommentWhen you're 900+ in the world (I didn't think the computer went that high) then a "what, me worry?" approach is better than taking the gas pipe....

Report Offensive CommentDuval shot 13-under-par 59 at the '99 Bob Hope Classic...the best closing round in PGA Tour history. Even if he never makes it back, he should remain respected.
