Girardi drops hammer on Yankees

Sick of watching his team embarrass the most prestigious uniform in sports, manager Joe Girardi blistered the New York Yankees ' ears last night. "He laid the hammer down," somebody with knowledge of the meeting said. "He challenged them." And Girardi wasn't the only voice booming in the clubhouse after a 7-0 loss to the Red Sox in front of 54,677 disgruntled Yankee Stadium customers, some of whom booed Andy PettitteAndy Pettitte and Derek Jeter. All of Girardi's coaches had something to say, and their words weren't dipped in honey.

BoSox Suck. Yanks take the next three. It messes up my prediction of the Sox being in third after playing Rays and Yanks but I will take it. :)

Okay, exactly what can a manager and the coaches do or say to these spoiled uber rich atheletes that will inspire them to play up to their capabilites? There are one of two thins in play here: either the Yankees are composed of players who just don't give a thit or the core of the team is becoming older and approaching the lean yerars of their careers. I think they still have enough to make run for the playoffs but does this team think that? Guess we will soon see,eh?

Its about time Girardi started yelling at these underperforming punks! It was a damn disgrace sitting in The Stadium last night. What a letdown of a game. Lets see if these guys have the guts to turn this thing around.

July 4, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Give credit to Lester. He did great last night.

But yeah, the Yanks were completely lifeless in all aspects. Dead and flat. They seem to be an all or nothing team thus far. Score 18 runs one game and 0 the next.

Okay, I see RSB drinking soe mfoamy cold ones and palying out on the Cape Codian beaches. Watch out fo that crab there, woman. So she will be indisposed for the day.
And Rebecca will be lost in her own reverie in the blue hills of Kentucky. (Bourbon and coke?). What is a poor boy to do...... play in a rock and roll band, of course!

July 4, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Three games left. I'm not worried. Or clinically depressed. Or suicidal. Yet.

July 4, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I'll be in and out today Joe, lots to do....and a game to watch ;)

Have a great 4th hon!!

This is what this team is this year. With the injuries they had, and have, and the disappointment the young pitchers were, this is it. They are starting pitchers twice a week that would not even make most teams. I don't see them winning 90 games this year.

July 4, 2008  10:16 AM ET

What's up, all? Coletrain, long time no see. Good morning, JC.

Anyway, all this talk about how crappy the Yanks are, people should keep in mind that on July 4th of last year, they were 40-42, and 11.5 games back. Now, I do think they need to start showing some signs of life here shortly, and the AL East has an interesting new twist with the Rays, but to write the Yankees off is a bit premature.

That said, the Yankees suck!

It's beginning to look like the Lester trades were the best trades Boston never made.

July 4, 2008  10:18 AM ET

The game was hopeless by the first inning, after Jeter made that bonehead throw that eventually cost the Yanks 2 runs.

Yeah, same to you Slinky. And thanks for the kind words.

I've never seen the energy sucked out of The Stadium faster than when that happened. Ugh. Also, Jeter needs to stop swinging at the first pitch every damn time. The guy is a groundout waiting to happen right now.

July 4, 2008  10:24 AM ET

It's long overdue, these guys are a bunch of overpaid average ball players. Jeter has been killing them on offense and defense. That throw in the first inning was a horrible play. It's about time these guys start earning their money and play good solid baseball.

I partially agree- a little EMOTIOIN is needed.....
but do you really think the players go up to bat trying to make out?
or try to make an error?

this team is about their left heanded hitters-
As they go- the team goes
when damon, abreu & giambi fgo 0 for 10....they aren't winning

July 4, 2008  10:38 AM ET

They are just not a very good team.

All the yelliing and bellyaching in the world wont make Jon Lester any worse or the Yankees any better.

Just a childish and unoriginal reaction.

Or perhaps Girardi is in over his head.

" Just a childish and unoriginal reaction. Or perhaps Girardi is in over his head'

why fault someone for showing emotion ?
he's pissed his team has gotten away from taking pitches & making the other pitcher work.....everyone is trying to hit the 5 run homerun

THe Yankees have been missing a VOCAL leader for YEARS,
missing FIRE....

I love Jeter, but he doesn't say a damn word
it worked well when you had Oneal, Tino & the other 90's yankees....
but this current 'professional' squad that has been over the last 7 years needs a kick in the pants
