UPS wants younger driver

Among the hot but unconfirmed rumors making the rounds in the Sprint Cup garage this week are that Richard Childress Racing will land UPS as a sponsor for Clint Bowyer's #07 Chevrolet. Multiple sources indicated that Bowyer's car was the favorite to take the sponsorship over from Michael Waltrip Racing and David Reutimann. One source close to the negotiations said RCR initially offered UPS #31-Jeff Burton, 41, but the delivery company wanted a younger driver with whom it could create a long-term identity and Bowyer is just 29. Burton, instead, will be sponsored next year by Caterpillar.

How old is Reuttemann? He isn't that old is he?
Is this more of a sign of problems at MWR. He did mention he'll take is check from New Hampshire and fix a leaking ship.

Report Offensive CommentI don't blame UPS for wanting younger drivers. The guy who made the delivery to my house last week looked ancient. He also had his left blinker light on as he drove away........

Report Offensive CommentIf this happens, will RCR change Bowyer's number? The 07 thing was to help in marketing Jack Daniels ol' #7 whiskey. RCR did run the #30 car some years back with Jeff Green in the AOL car.

Report Offensive CommentReuti is about the same age, but he has had disappointing results this year. UPS simply wants an established team , that stays organized year over year. MWR is doing better this year, but not by much. I hate to see UPS bail out on MWR, especially since sponsors are an even bigger challenge, now, than the COT was..........But I understand why they are.....I guess Bowyer would be the best of the availables....but he would not be my first choice.
I have not heard anything about a number change for Bowyer.....I hope his UPDS car is as cool looking as Reuti's was.

Report Offensive CommentReutemann is a free agent again this year. MWR only signed him to a 1 year deal and took their sweat time last year signing Reutemann.
Personally he seams to be doing fairly decent driver with so so gear. If some of the good teams were smart they would grab and see what he can do with good to great gear.
Reutemann would be a good fit in the 07 car and then RCR ould just add a number for Bowyer's new ride.

Report Offensive CommentThe new #21? Am I missing something here. Do you mean is Casey going to drive the #21? Or do you mean RCR will be taking the #21? If you mean will Casey drive the #21, I would bet against it. I think Jon Wood will drive that next season. I think it will still be a Wood Bros. car as well. How much longer they are around is very questionable though. Next year might be the last season for the Wood Bros. unless they get things turned around.
Silly season is rather interesting.
Right now you have: Casey Mears as the most established available driver.
You very well could see: Truex Jr, Reuttiman, Newman, and Stewart changing teams by the end of July.
My guess is that Newman and Stewart go to the new Haas operation that Stewart will by in to. Riggs and Sauter will be left with open rides.
Lagano will fill the 20 ride at JGR and Truex will go to RCR in the 4th car. That will leave Mears possibly going to the 12 Penske car (remember his uncle ran a long time for Penske).
I think you will see some of these rides fold, possibly including the 44 at MWR and the 01 and possibly 1 at DEI. If the 01 closes Regan Smith is also on the market.
Silly season will get VERY SILLY in the next month. A lack of sponsorship money, the top 35 rule, and the downturn in the economy may have a major factor in who driver for whom next season.

Report Offensive CommentI would be surprised if JGR puts Logano in the #20 IF and I say IF Tony makes a move. Gibbs could leave the kid in Nationwide for a little more experience.
The number of drivers looking to hook up with a new team is pretty large and Gibbs could snag someone decent. Most guys would not hesitate to drive for Gibbs.Just sign a driver for one year and then bring Logano up to Cup.

Report Offensive CommentThe delay in signing Reuti by MWR, last year was due to negotiating probs with the sponsors.....that had to be sorted out first.....I agree that Reuti is more capable than he is showing.....and I agree it is mostly the ride.

Report Offensive CommentRCR is starting a 4th team, but it won't be #21. #21 will only be available if the Wood Bros. close up shop. RCR does have the #30 or #33 they could use for the team, I think they have already said the # will be the 33 for that car.

Report Offensive CommentAs for the 20 car. How many drivers will be willing to sign a 1 year deal to drive the 20 car? I think the problem will be getting a quality driver into that car if they don't move Joey up. I agree he can use one full Nationwide Series season but if Tony leaves I wonder if there will be sponsor pressure to move him up.
