Ganassi called cops for firings

With 71 employees already in the unemployment line, Chip Ganassi Racing is looking to cut another 30 jobs from its stock-car operations, several current employees said Saturday. The team shut down the #40 Dodge earlier this week after it wasn't able to find a sponsor for driver Dario Franchitti. With that came layoffs, some of them surprising. Several team sources confirmed that department heads often weren't included in the decision-making process. Some employees who were laid off had been with SABCO Racing long before Ganassi bought the team from Felix Sabates in 2001. While the #40 Dodge was missing from Saturday night's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, most of that team still had a job. The cuts last week affected the #41 and #42 teams more than the 40. Most of the mechanics from Reed Sorenson's and Juan Pablo Montoya's team received their pink slips, replaced by members of the defunct team. Those left behind now are bracing for more cuts. Many of those who lost their jobs last week apparently didn't take the news well. In fact, the team had 12 police officers on hand to keep order.

Who Cares?

That headline has nothing to do with the story...

Good job again FN

July 7, 2008  09:49 AM ET

So who takes the news of being laid off 'well'?

July 7, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Like I said before -- there are sponsors out there that will put their decals on whatever is out front ... sell their souls to the devil they are and the teams that have been around for awhile can't catch a break. The guys doin' the grunt work back in the shops are the real losers...

I hate it for the folks who got let go. But, NASCAR racing is a business, and, sometimes, hard decisions have to be made.

July 7, 2008  11:44 AM ET

Ganassi laughing in that picture and thinking, Guess what Dario, in a few weeks your butt will be unemployed har har har.

July 7, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Just paint a lion on the hood

July 7, 2008  02:40 PM ET

Beat it Chip...go back to open wheels and leave NASCAR to those who put it first and foremost.

July 7, 2008  03:16 PM ET

These teams will be gone or sold to another team by next year
Sounds like what started at GINN racing before the hammer dropped there

July 7, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Maybe if you actually won a race once in a while, you wouldnt have to fire everyone Chip....Also, try working some salads into the mix........

July 7, 2008  05:28 PM ET

They should call the fashion cops about those $3 shades.

July 7, 2008  06:36 PM ET

YODA, those are just tacky aren't they!

Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway is reporting today that Teresa Earnhardt has enlisted the services of Bear, Stearns and Company to find a buyer -- or at least a major financial investor -- for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Bear Stearns is an investment bank, securities trading and brokerage firm based in New York City, and has been charged with finding a buyer for the entire operation. Barring that, Earnhardt is said to be interested in selling at least a minority interest in the team.

DEI President of Global Operations Max Siegel declined to comment on the story when contacted earlier today.

DEI finds itself at a competitive crossroads, with Mark Martin leaving the team at season's end for a new ride with Hendrick Motorsports. Martin Truex Jr. is unhappy with the recent performance of his Bass Pro Shops-sponsored Chevrolet, and has not yet signed the contract extension team officials announced more than four months ago. He currently ranks 14th in championship points, but is likely to fall further behind when NASCAR announces penalties this week for the roofline violation found on Truex's car in opening inspection at Daytona. Team officials admitted last week that they may be forced to trim their roster by one next season if sponsorship cannot be found for Regan Smith's #01 Chevrolet, and reports have surfaced that Paul Menard may also be shopping around his Menard's sponsorship for next season.

I wish there was a pic up there of Ashley Judd in a cop outfit instead of Team Blueblocker.

12 Cop's were in place for a lay off at Ganassi ? How many Real crime's happened when they were doing this ? SAD ! Ganassi Suck's !

July 7, 2008  11:09 PM ET

If the drivers would stop all the crying and BS some fans might not be such fair weather fans. I for one am so tired of all the belly aching of the drivers I can't hardly watch anymore. I'm sure others feel the same way and now ratings and viewers are dropping.
