How MMA is reviving boxing

The argument that mixed martial arts is destroying boxing gets weaker everyday. Mixed martial arts isn't destroying boxing, it is helping its revival. As mixed martial artists continue to refine their game, many are turning to boxing in an effort to gain more control during the stand-up. Several top mixed martial artists -- Jens Pulver and Forrest Griffin among them -- have boxing backgrounds, while others like Quinton "Rampage" Jackson have turned to high-level boxing trainers to maximize punching power. But former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Andrei Arlovski is taking his boxing skills beyond the cage. Arlovski, who works under high-profile boxer trainer Freddie Roach, is scheduled to make his boxing debut Sept. 13 (HBO pay-per-view) on the Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez undercard. He is scheduled to face Ben Rothwell in an MMA pay-per-view bout (Affliction Banned) July 19. The opponent for Arlovski's fight in September has yet to be named. But if he is successful, more mixed martial artists might consider participating in boxing matches. Griffin, who has a sharp jab and solid overhand right, would be a force at cruiserweight.

George St. Pierre would have a good chance as well. There is more money in boxing so why not?

don't make me laugh. mma fighters are going to get killed in the boxing ring against anyone half competent.

Referring to Pulver as a top MMA is ridiculous...at this point he couldn't beat anybody in MMA, boxing or any other sport. He's got the punching power of a mosquito bite

He went the full 5 round with Faber and beat Cub Swanson in 35 seconds. Thats not too bad

Its going to take a lot for me to watch boxing. Theres only 2-3 boxers I "may" watch

Any MMA guy who steps in a ring with a real boxer will get destroyed. Samething with a Boxer in an MMA cage.

Clearly the Boxing spin-doctors worked up this angle on the MMA vs. Boxing story. Sounds like desperation spin to me. Clearly Boxing is worried that young fans are turning to MMA instead of boxing.
A few MMA fighters with boxing backgrounds doesn't lead to great interest in boxing.
Boxing needs some high-profile matches on free tv, a unified heavyweight

I agree with the premise that MMA may help cultivate fans for boxing. I am a long time boxing fan who recently got hooked on MMA. I now prefer MMA because there are more facets and fighting styles in an MMA fight (striking with fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet which can hit opponents above or below the belt, wrestling, submissions, etc.) and a fighter who is losing can quickly change a fight with a submission, solid strike or some ground-n-pound. MMA is a lot less predictable. The gloves have less padding and a big punch can have more impact and when you get a knockdown you don't have to go to a neutral corner for a standing 10-count. You can immediately follow-up with more blows to finish off your opponent. There are often fighters on the bottom who are getting their *ss kicked who are able to get an arm bar, leg lock, kimora type of submission hold and force a tap-out victory. Too many boxers are content to win 10-9 rounds for the easy decision and not mix it up because they have a hand speed advantage and don't have to throw down too much i.e. Mayweather. This is why Manny Pacquio is the most popular boxer; he
isn't cautious and he throws down old school. Kelly Pavlik is also a good boxer to watch.

The MMA fighters will not do well in boxing, because their handspeed generally isn't as good and their head movement isn't as good. The boxers would get crushed in the cage with the MMA fighters because they don't have the skills to defend against the kick boxing, wrestling, ju jitsu techniques that will be thrown at them.

I have to agree with Hank Hill, Pulver is still a good fighter. The Faber vs. Pulver fight was probably the best MMA fight of 2008 so far. I think spaul mistakenly hit the wrong keys while typing or knows very little about MMA.

I agree with Hank as well. I thought Faber would take him out quickly. And he did impress me again Cub Swanson. As far as his punching power, I would venture to say you would change your tune if you took a shot from Jens.

Thinking that a one-sided beating for 5 rounds is a great fight is questionable.
I did watch that fight, and Pulver did nothing but hang on. You guys have seen too many Rocky movies.
His fight with Penn was a pathetic display as well.
