Why Favre won't fly with Panthers

Brett Favre to the Carolina Panthers? Ridiculous. This is Jake Delhomme's team. As great as Favre has been in Green Bay, the Panthers don't need the distraction. His presence would be overshadowing, and far more disruptive than any benefit. About the only sure benefit would be publicity. To pursue Favre would be irresponsible desperation. The Panthers desperately want to win the Super Bowl, but there is plenty enough wisdom among the folks calling the shots to know to stay far, far away from Favre. He might fit with some team if he really plays again, but not the Panthers. Carolina doesn't need No.4. The jersey number isn't even available. John Kasay has been wearing it since the team's 1995 debut. Favre would be looking for a final hurrah. Carolina is a team looking for a fresh start. The two don't mix. During the offseason, the Panthers beefed up their offensive line, drafted a running back (Jonathan Stewart) and made it clear to anyone even remotely paying attention that they have confidence in Delhomme and his surgically repaired right elbow.

ummm. yeah right. brett gets cut by the packers then we have to watch him play in a diffrent jersey like emmitt, dorsett, rice, namath, dickerson and others. these will be those years that are forgotten when people talk of his accomplishments.

Jake Delhomme's team? He's got 1 or 2 years left. But Favre needs to go away quick! Just like Favre is the man

Jake Delhomme's team? That was funny. And the no. 4 is taken by John Kasay? I think they could work something out if they got him.

July 8, 2008  05:56 AM ET

Honestly, Does anyone think Favre is going to be back?

July 8, 2008  06:00 AM ET

Have you been to Hattiesburg, Mississippi? I, unfortunately have. Yea. Brett Favre is coming back. You can only mow the grass so much

So JJ, your guess, which team?

July 8, 2008  06:07 AM ET

Well, it has to be an AFC team. I don't think the Pack would let him go to to an NFC team if they can stop it. And looking at the AFC, my best guess would be the Ravens. They have a defense and decent running game. Favre won't go to a team that doesn't have a shot at winning it all. If he can somehow get to the NFC, the Panthers and Vikings make the most sense.

July 8, 2008  06:11 AM ET

I could see that

July 8, 2008  06:22 AM ET

I think they Ravens or KC would be a good fit for him. What about SD, could you imagine that? LT, who has been bitter ever since they let Brees go, would cream his pants.

July 8, 2008  06:43 AM ET

I was going to say San Diego if Rivers knee isnt 100% when then season starts. I dont see anybody wanting to go to KC right now.

July 8, 2008  07:13 AM ET

Favre won't go anywhere but GB. He is not a prototypical QB....he is a gun slinger. A team would have to alter their entire offense for him. Ain't gonna happen folks.

Favre will be doing card shows in Mississippi this NFL season. That's where he belongs. His time has come and gone. He is a a statistical HOF'er. Overrated, but still a HOF'er based on his stats.

Farve needs to shut up and write a book. As soon as he thinks of something juicy. Like painkiller abuse. Or some of the better hits he has taken. And who gave them to him and when and etc.

July 8, 2008  07:50 AM ET

I wouldn't bet the house and the Ferrari that Jake Delhomme finishes the season as the Panthers' No 1 QB. If he struggles, look for Matt Moore to take over. This will be his team pretty soon, anyway.

Really? Favre needs to shut up? Please, tell me all the things Favre has said on this topic. How about the sports writers shut up? Makes more sense they are the ones doing all the "talking" not Favre. Think you can keep that straight?

July 8, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Panthers will never happen... if Brett plays he will be a packer or likely a vike.. hope he is a packer.

July 8, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Agreed that if #5 comes back he will be withthe Pack or the Vikings...As a lifelong Pack fan (yes I do wear my cheesehead) it will be strange to hear about and see Favre in another uniform.

God, I pray he stays retired..I couldn't handle another weeping retirement speech expecially if he didn't mean it....
