MLS union denounces SuperLiga
Irked by the apparent misrepresentation about the Superliga purse, the MLSPA slams the league in a statement. The purse for Superliga, the second-year tournament pitting Major League Soccer and Mexican clubs, which kicks off this weekend, is a cool million dollars. At least, that's what MLS loves to say. But on Saturday, the MLS Players Association sent a few shots across the bows of the league. In a statement emailed to the media, the MLSPA slammed the tournament and MLS's marketing arm, Soccer United Marketing, for misrepresenting the true amount of money involved. "MLS is misleading its great fans," the statement reads. "What has not been revealed by the league is that its New York office has unilaterally set its own bonus structure for players, who will receive only a small fraction of the $1 million....

Good for this! I think SuperLiga is a waste of time and money. We have the new CONCACAF Champions League and I think that is good enough. CONCACAF beeds to start building up the leagues and SuperLiga isn't going to help any.

I agree, we're spreading teams a little too thin with all of these tournaments. It's nice to get the exposure but the Champions cup should and will be the coveted title for the MLS teams. And the players don't get the Mil? C'mon MLS, why so cheap?

i like the Superliga, BUT i think it shouldnt be the top teams in the league....
i think the Superliga should be something like the top 4 teams that dont make the CL.... this way we wont be spreading our teams out too thin, and we'll get more of our league intl' experience....
honestly i think that the league should go to a single table, therefore the top 4 teams are sent to the CL (excluding TFC since they are included in the Canada bid) and the next 4 are sent to Superliga (but this obviously could include TFC).... this way a larger number of teams are getting more play and experience....

I agree with Keeper and Lazymike97 on this. To me it's a waste.

Superliga is a waste
We should have the top teams from Canada to Panama, not just US and Mexcio
One team from the other countries (the champs), and the top 2 or 3 teams from MLS and Mexico

Or we could make it like a Uefa Cup and send the best teams in the Copa Libertadores
I still like the idea of more repersentation though

Can someone explain to me why the MLS has conferences when the teams with the 8 best records in the league compete for the MLS Cup?? Doesn't that make the conferences standings pretty useless?
I'm gonna be really annoyed if they don't switch to a single-table format when Philly enters the league.

the "confrences" is one of the only americanized aspects left in the MLS... but soon it'll go as well.... theres already rumors of it leaving within the next season or 2....
as i stated before, keep superliga as a UEFA Cup... no need to stack our top teams with an unthinkable schedule... our rosters just arent that deep... give more teams a chance to succeed in tournys and you'll see more growth..

The top 4 teams in the US and the top 4 teams in Mexico make the CONCACAF CL. The SuperLiga is just a waste of time. Personally, I'd rather see 2 from the US, 2 from Mexico, 2 from Costa Rica, and 2 from Guatemala if the SuperLiga is still being done.

it is not the top 4 teams from the MLS going to the CL....
i think its:
USOC winner is given a spot..
MLS Cup winner is given a spot
and i think its the top team from each confrence
obviously if there are duplicates its given to the next top team....
of course i could be wrong, but i know its not necessarily the top 4 teams

If you start adding teams from all these other countries you take away from the Champions League unless you make it like the UEFA cup and only invite teams that didn't make the Champions League.

MLS uses the conference set up for scheduling and that's pretty much it. It will stick until they have a steady number of teams. I think they get rid of it once Philly joins in '10.
I agree with Jeevs. Let's get some MLS teams in the Liberadores. It will be so much better for developing our young talent if they regularly have to play against the Brazilian and Argentinian teams.

I think the MLS representation in CONCACAF CL is...
USOC Winner
MLS League winner
MLS Cup winner
and MLS Cup runner up
Yes to a single table in MLS, yes to developing CONCACAF CL. It wouldn't be The Champions League, but CONCACAF CL would certainly be a fun champions league to watch.

I think the SuperLiga is a good thing, if only because the more interplay between the Mexican Primera Division and the MLS, the better. The CONCACAF Champions League is also a great thing to be sure, but just like Europe also has the UEFA Cup, why not let CONCACAF also have another lesser international tournament to supplement it?
Ultimately, I would like to see more player trading between the Primera and the MLS. The more that Mexican clubs and fans play against MLS clubs and find that they are worthy opponents, the more likely it is that we'll finally start to see some truly significant and unilateral player trading between the leagues. Both leagues would benefit from it.
The EPL, La Liga, and Serie A have a similar relationship in Europe. We need to create something similar in the CONCACAF region, and the only significant candidates for it are in fact the MLS and Primera. The time to foster and build this relationship is now, and this situation is one where more is definitely better than less.

anyone else noticing that there is the rivalry between the mexican national team and the USMN is wearing into the Mexican league and the MLS.... reports of fights breaking out in DC's game..... fights broke out last years tourny in LA.... rivalries forming between teams... but i stand by the fact it should go to the next top 4 teams after the CL is determined... spread the wealth

i agree with the statements that say its good due to the fact it gives MLS experience playing against the top league in concacaf.
i think its a little too early to be pushing for MLS in libertadores. the mexican teams have a hard time doing well in that maybe its better to wait until MLS consistently can beat the primera first. I think the new format for the concacaf cl will help as it will be 24 teams now and if a MLS team can win that they will get a chance to play the top south american or european team in the club world cup

I'm normally not all that pro-unions, but in this case they are right. MLS is pricing this tournament in a ridiculous fashion.

I would love to see it used as the UEFA Cup of CONCACAF.
@ MadridistAmericano | 07/14/08, 01:56 PM
it's not the teams with the 8 best records. It's the best 4 from each conference and the next 2 regardless of conference after that. I'm also guessing they hope to someday have 2 conferences of 16 teams. I hope they just have a single table of 20 but that's a matter for another discussion...

you are right about the fights. It's time for stadiums to start partitioning off away support. There were a bunch of TFC fans who got the crap kicked out of them in Chicago this weekend as well.
Plus, it'll just look better to have all the supporters of 1 team in one place. It'll also make them more vocal.

Super Liga, whats the point??? Make it a UEFA Cup version. As for conferences, it will get eliminated sooner or later. MLS should also make another trophy before the season starts like the Supercopa of Spain, where the top two teams could go at it in the begining of the season... Also Concacaf should have the winner of the Superliga and the winner of Champions League go at it too.
