Spurrier: I'm not going anywhere

Steve Spurrier cleared up several items Thursday: He's not leaving South Carolina, he's not ceding his role as the Gamecocks' chief strategist and he thinks he's got a special, albeit untested, talent in junior quarterback Tommy Beecher. "I will oversee all the playcalling. I'm still the offensive coordinator," Spurrier said. "In fact, I plan to spend more time with the quarterbacks and the offense this year than maybe I have in three years."

PLEASE,if you don't do any better this year than you have in the past, you will have plenty of time to do whatever you want to do. We deserve better, USC has STRUGGLED with YOU and LOU, long enough.Get BETTER or GET GONE. Jerry

And does anyone outside of South Carolina care?

Unfortunately it's hard to win with mediocre talent, and hard to improve on mediocre talent without successful recruiting, which in turn is hard to do if you don't win ball games!

Because you yearn for the good ole days of Lou Holtz (33-37), Brad Scott (23-32), Sparky Woods (24-28)...you get the picture?

July 18, 2008  09:36 AM ET

So that means 7 wins instead of 6...and of course your annual rear-end kicking by Clemson.

1st Thursday Night game of the year - Spurrier gets exposed for the over rated coach he has become. Tom O'Brien and the Wolfpack come out of Columbia with a win.

July 18, 2008  10:06 AM ET

That's not a homer pick at all (sarcasm). The wolfpack are even worst than the gamecocks.

I think its interesting that a guy who has a basketball player from South Carolina as his signature icon is acting like no one cares about South Carolina. Smart!

July 18, 2008  10:29 AM ET

A guy who has a South Carolina native as his signature icon is asking if anyone outside S.C. cares about south carolina athletics..... interesting.

July 18, 2008  10:53 AM ET

He still doesn't have a quarterback.

July 18, 2008  11:08 AM ET

I'll play Qb for him, I mean I was a TE, but hey its South Carolina how hard can it be???

July 18, 2008  11:22 AM ET

No, Steve, you're going somewhere... mediocre-ville. On your way into town, You'll see Coach Bowden and the Noles heading out of there on the Road To Greatness. Enjoy.

You good folks should know that It isn't in me to resist a jab at Spurrier. No disrespect towards South Carolina, I hope someday they can get a coach with some class and integrity, seems like they deserve it.

I love the FSU idiot chiming in when they have not won squat in 10 years!!! Unless of course you consider the ACC (All Crappy Conference) a real football league (maybe fut-bol at best). Steve can't win in SC because they don't have superior athletes like the Gators, Dawgs, LSU, etc. Wonder why Preacher Bobby did not join the SEC when he had the chance? Wonder why most academically talented kids in FL apply to UF first choice? Why did Tebow choose UF over the more "religious" Bobby B.??? FSU is the B school. 2nd choice. Also Ran. Bridesmaid. Wannabees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 18, 2008  12:24 PM ET

...and FSU is not mediocre at best? Spurrier has no class or integrity according to "eyeswidesopen" (should be eyeswideshut like the mediocre film by same name)??? The Florida School for Women (as FSU is so well known by it's real history) ignoramus should talk integrity: Free Shoes U, Bobby B's School for Advanced Academic Cheating, Crime Spree Proving Grounds, Born Again Bad Boys Club, ad nauseum!!! y'all talk real big for a bunch of sorority girls!!!

July 18, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Spurrier was supposed to be the savior of that program... but so was Lou. Looks like you could put anybody at the head of that program and end up with a .500 season at best.

The problem is talent, the campus sucks spread all over downtown Columbia, the city of Columbia also sucks bigtime. Why would any high talent player go there?

July 18, 2008  12:55 PM ET

USC FANS PLEASE REMEMBER YOU WEREN'T EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT AS A TOP 25 PROGRAM BEFORE THE OLD BALL COACH CAME. SO PLEASE BE PROUD THAT FANS OUTSIDE USC IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT THE PROGRAM. GO HAWGS
