Nicklaus: Today's players too soft

Jack Nicklaus noticed some old faces atop the leaderboard during a brief visit to British Open yesterday, making him wonder if younger players have too much money and not enough desire. Nicklaus' private jet arrived as 53-year-old Greg Norman was on his way to another round of even-par 70 to take a one-shot lead. Tom Watson, a 58-year-old with five claret jugs, opened with a 74 in the worst of the weather at Royal Birkdale, and 49-year-old Tom Lehman also had 74 in the first round. As for the youth? "If they don't win, they still walk home with a big check," Nicklaus said. "They don't have to do some of the things the Watsons had to do, the Normans, the Lehmans, and that's to gut it out."

It's not the players fault that they can be 125th on the money list and still be a millionaire.

Don't start with the "back-in-my-day" crap, Jack. You'd have taken the money too.

July 19, 2008  12:24 PM ET

But we won't know anything definitive until we get muktech's take on this.

July 19, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Not just in golf either.

July 19, 2008  01:07 PM ET

How about the top 20 make money, the rest get a plane ticket home or to the next event?

July 19, 2008  01:53 PM ET

When Jack talks, you better listen, PGA.

July 19, 2008  01:55 PM ET

HELEN THE KELLER, AT LEAST I AGREE WITH YOU ON ONE THING: WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY, NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE SAYS NO. SO, YOU CAN'T BLAME THE PLAYERS.

SO, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THE TEDDY BEAR-LESS NICKLAUS! HE SHOULD SHUT UP BECAUSE TODAY THE TEDDY BEAR-LESS NICKLAUS IS NOW A CHAMILLIONNAIRE!!

NOW, AS FOR THE CHOKE CHOKE MEISTER PHIL MICKELSON ON THE OTHER HAND... DON'T GET ME STARTED!!

July 19, 2008  02:10 PM ET

Back in the day, men wore sweaters and hit small balls off of tees with sticks LIKE MEN!!

July 19, 2008  02:19 PM ET

Hey, Jack. You're soft. You didn't fly coach to there.

July 19, 2008  03:46 PM ET

It's true.

Like they said 15yrs ago even, players today don't have to win to thrive- they can finish top 10s-15s & make more than enough money + even stay high enough in the world rankings to play all the majors.

July 19, 2008  03:58 PM ET

Helen i think you secretly desire muktech, who i am sure lost a bundle somewhere on Phil!

July 19, 2008  04:51 PM ET

So what? I just read Michael Phelps made $5 million last year swimming...SWIMMING!!! At least that's a sport!

July 19, 2008  05:57 PM ET

THA BEAST (I DESIRE YOUR AVATAR), YOU ARE ONTO SOMETHING REGARDING HELEN THE KELLER AND ME. I THINK HELEN THE KELLER IS MY SECRET ADMIRER. LET ME LOL A LITTLE BIT... LOOOL LOOOOL LOOOOL.

AS FOR THE CHOKE CHOKE MEISTER PHIL MICKELSON... DON'T GET ME STARTED!!

July 19, 2008  06:39 PM ET

muktech, did you bet on Phil once upon a time? Inquiring minds want to know.

July 19, 2008  06:58 PM ET

Ah, the feckless BEAST has figured it out.

July 19, 2008  06:59 PM ET

"Helen the Keller?"

July 19, 2008  07:04 PM ET

"making him wonder if younger players have too much money and not enough desire. Nicklaus' private jet arrived as.."

Um...does anyone else notice something a bit odd this part of the story?

OK, Jack...how many of these spoiled, soft, overpaid players do you think took their own private jet to the tourney?

July 19, 2008  07:22 PM ET

and "Chamillionaire?"

That muktech is a wordsmith. He sure knows how to turn a blind girls head.

July 19, 2008  07:58 PM ET

That was a miserable attempt at analysis, Jack.

July 19, 2008  08:14 PM ET

It's called Jackanalysis.

July 19, 2008  08:38 PM ET
