White: Silva better than Emelianenko

UFC president Dana White has been relentless in his criticism of ex-PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko over the past several years. White has criticized and mocked the popular Russian for failing to face top competition and taking on inexperienced and even smaller fighters over the past three years. But upon learning that Emelianenko had submitted ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia on Saturday in Anaheim, Calif., in less than a minute, White unflinchingly admitted he was impressed. "It does (change my opinion)," he conceded. "Tim Sylvia was a real opponent." But it didn't change his opinion enough to make him reconsider his opinion that Anderson Silva is the world's best fighter. Not at all," White said, beaming. "Do you even need to ask me after that?"

Jealous much?

July 20, 2008  01:03 PM ET

Oh btw, FIRST

Silva has dominated his weight class for almost 2 years. Fedor has dominated MMA for the last 5 and has beaten everyone put infront of him. Silva is very good but Fedor is a phenom and best pound for pound.

The problem is he hasn't faced very many quality opponents. I think he's a great fighter and showed that his ground game is as good as his standup submitting Sylvia. Silva is at the top of his game right now too though. I think an argument can be made for both fighters.

July 20, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Dana, get over your self. Silva is a great fighter, Fedor is a great fighter, just leave it at that.

Fedor would dominate any current UFC heavyweight including Randy

July 20, 2008  03:07 PM ET

I saw Emelia fighting some guy who's name escapes me, but I did remember he looked like he was 50 lbs over weight. If that is all big "E" can fight, guys who are fat hogs and outta shape, then he isn't even close to be the best in his weight class.

July 20, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Devo, you obviously don't know anything about Fedor

He's beaten current UFC heavyweight champ Nogueira twice, Cro Cop, Kevin Randelman, Mark Coleman, Matt Lindlun, Hunt and everyone else he fought.

July 20, 2008  03:50 PM ET

silva is the best pound for pound fighter in mma....especially after what i witnessed last night

July 20, 2008  06:08 PM ET

Beating smaller guys? yeah right,he has fought in open weight classes where he has fought guys 80+ lbs bigger and don't forget he beat UFC's current champ Noguiera twice. Silva is great and may be the best lb. for lb. but Emilianenko is neck and neck with him. After both of there victories Sat. night they both are proven to be fun to watch and beat bigger fighters, but they are completely diferent fighters and the only way to settle the argument is for a 205 lb match between the two.Now talk about a great fight.

I also believe the only reason loudmouth **** Elianenko is that he has notbeen able to get him into the UFC and he covers his bruised ego by talking trash about a guy that would clean out his Heavyweight division.

July 20, 2008  06:28 PM ET

if dana thinks that fedor hasn't beat good enough guys then he must really think the ufc heavyweight division is crap since its champion was beaten twice by emelianenko and he's beat 2 other ufc heavyweight champions. if fedor was in the ufc dana would be hyping him up to be pound for pound best along with silva.

July 20, 2008  07:17 PM ET

Fedor is the best pound for pound in the world, no doubt. White is a prick, and he is most of the reason why people want Affliction to suceed. He needs to be taken down a few notches.

July 20, 2008  07:27 PM ET

It looks like Tito Ortiz is going to join Affliction, he was hobnobin it up with Trump.

July 20, 2008  08:34 PM ET

Fedor has dominated for the last 5 years .... hmmm except he didn't fight anyone of relevance between 05 and last night .... thats 3 years. Give the respect to guys who compete against the best in the world 3 times a year. Yea he's beaten Noguiera but since then Antonio has fought 7 times ... if your a fighter you fight and Fedor may be unbeaten but he hasn't fought anyone in 3 years. Silva fights and if you wanna be P4P #1 you gotta come out and compete not every 3 years but 3 times a year. Till he proves that he can do that he can't be pound for pound the best in the world

July 20, 2008  09:48 PM ET

Yea that's right Silva is still top dog P4P, but Fedor was very impressive. I would have to put him at #2

FEDOR is the number 2 P4P Silva is top dog

Of course Dana would be hyping him. He would be calling him the best fighter in the world, but since he isn't fighting for him of course he is going to say silva is the best P4P fighter. No matter which way you pick them it is a very close margin as to who is the best P4P fighter. I loved the open weight Grand Prix tourneys Pride used to have. I would love to see the UFC do one of them.

July 21, 2008  03:23 AM ET

yeah i think Tito was seeing if the Affliction show was going to be a success before he decides whether or not he is going to sign up. I didn't get to see the Fedor fight but watches SIlva..that would be some fight if they fought

No doubt?> Wha???
Plenty of doubt.
Silva #1 pound for pound. I put Fedor at #2 ...but there is also a good argument for BJ Penn or GSP as well.

July 21, 2008  06:51 AM ET

Dana White is clearly in denial mode.

I have Fedor as #1 P4P, with Anderson Silva a close 2nd.

July 21, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Put them in the ring against each other... and let's settle it the only way possible. This war of words garbage is just that.... garbage. Dana White is just turning himself into a white (hahaha) Don King, without the rhymes and catchy titles...

Well, putting them in the ring won't determine much since the discussion is pound for pound. I think Fedor would beat Silva if they both fought at their natural weight. Silva would just be giving up too much size. And there is now way Fedor could get down to Silva's weight. A fight between them wouldn't solve the P4P discussion.
