Steinbrenner OKs dealing prospects

During last week's All-Star break, the source said, Hal Steinbrenner instructed Yankees GM Brian Cashman to make whatever moves were necessary before the deadline, even if it meant dealing some of the organization's highly touted prospects. It is unlikely the Yankees would deal Phil Hughes, since the commissioner must approve any deal that includes a player on the disabled list and the team still believes he will be a top-level pitcher once he gets past his injury issues. Reliever Mark Melancon is the only true untouchable among the other prospects, leaving plenty of players up for grabs in the right deal. The Yankees are focused on two areas: adding a righthanded bat and a starting pitcher, with several targets already on their radar. Pittsburgh's Jason Bay and Xavier Nady are the top two outfield bats on the market. The Yankees have discussed starting pitchers such as Seattle's Jarrod Washburn, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo and Toronto's A.J. Burnett. The Bombers also are in the market for a lefthanded reliever, with Pittsburgh's Damaso Marte and Colorado's Brian Fuentes among the potential targets.

There is not a name mentioned on the Yankees radar that would hurt them. I like our chances down the stretch as always.

July 23, 2008  06:23 AM ET

I smell desperation. Whew. It sure feels good here in Anaheim.

July 23, 2008  06:26 AM ET

Now he wants to deal...perhaps to little to late.

July 23, 2008  06:36 AM ET

Hughes, Kennedy and Cano for Halladay. Hahaha. I know it's impossible but wouldn't you guys love to see Doc pitching in pinstripes?

or

Hughes and Kennedy for Joe Mauer.lol

or

The Whole knicks team for Kobe.

No sense at all.

July 23, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Thing is jayrpanlilio, Halladay is not what's on the table in Toronto, Burnett is and if Hank wants him you pretty much described the package Toronto will want from the Yankees....

Hank vetoed a trade for Santana because he overvalued his young players, at least this year anyway. Sure, the story can change, but so far the young guns that were going to be the future pitching staff have mostly shot blanks. As Yankee desperation grows he will learn that the price for anyone that can help his team is growing higher by the minute

He doesn't get it, but the rest of the teams in MLB are interested in helping themselves, not doing whatever it takes to help the Yankees....

ok, saying it is all right to deal prospects if Cashman finds a deal worth making and then wildly dealing prospects where they have shown a reluctance to do so in the recent past are two different things. If Cashman is close to making a deal that will strengthen the Yankees a whole freaking bunch then he is authorized to add one of the potentail - emphasis on potential here - major leaguers they have down on the farm. Yes ,these farm boys have great potential and, yes, they are worth keeping around to try and work them onto the big club but if using one of these so called jewels improves the major league team exponentially, then do it. As long as it is done without ransoming the total future for todays "hero" that will be left on tomorow's trash heap.

OK we already have enough people out wondering around in the outfield, we don't need another BAT either.. we could use another starting pitcher, like burrnett he would be a good addition. all thou hasn't he spent lots of time on the DL too?? Arroyo was OK when he was in Boston, but since going to the REDS he has been terrible, i don't think he would be a good fit in pinstripes either.

July 23, 2008  09:21 AM ET

foolish...cashman has a plan now lets see how it works. he wanted to hold on prospects in the trade for santana. if you cant find better players than him why give them up for a lesser player? stick it out yanks

July 23, 2008  09:24 AM ET

As a Yankee fan, I think its best to hunker down with the players we have. Team don't win through trades and free agency. They win by bdinging guys up together and learning to play together. Let Hughes, and Kennedy figure it out before we send them packing for an old pro

July 23, 2008  09:36 AM ET

I like Nady and Bay but pitching is where it's at. Burnett would be sweet but could they re-sign him & would the Jays want an arm and a leg to deal him to a divison rival

July 23, 2008  09:39 AM ET

bottom line: the yankees need a big starting pitcher. Rasner, Ponson, and even Mussina and Pettite cannot be relied on to all work out. IDK when Wang's back.

July 23, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Trade the prospects...it's not like they can't buy them back when they pan out later in their career.

July 23, 2008  09:59 AM ET

I don't think it is going to be a CC/Santana type of deal. Cash likes to "upgrade" at positions. Maybe one of the young speedsters they brought up will be traded, or a couple of prospects, one high one mid or low.
It is clear the Yankees are looking now though.

Wow, how lucky for the rest of the league......and what a surprise they are ready to trade some of their overrated, disappointing prospects. This happens ALL THE TIME. The Yankees can't miss, untouchable prospects eventually miss, and get traded off to teams that still by the hype. Can anyone name ONE Yankee prospects that was traded and didn't turn out to be, at BEST, average? I can't think of one prospect developed by the Yankees since the mid-90s who was more than hype, aside from Alfonso Soriano.

thnak you, AllStarz, for returning some sanity, logic and proportion to this thread.

Maybe that is why the Yankees had a dynasty at the end of the 90's...

okay and just for belly laughs exactly how great are, say, the BoSox' prospects doing? I mean they are thinking of benching one guy, and, then let me know exactly how geat their young pitchers like Bucholz are doing. The point is that i am not knocking the Sox here, but rather, I am pointing out it is the rare prospect who comes up and blows away the oppositon. It takes time to develop and prosper in the majors. Two examples: (1) Wille Mays was so terrible when he first came up he couldn't hit the ball if it were a beach ball. He was so devastated that he wanted to quit. His dad, I believe, told him to persevere and the Giants stayed with him and lo and behold 660 HRs later.... (2) Sandy Koufax was a run of the mill .470 pitcher for the first six years of his career and his ERA was in the high threes in a time of pitcher dominance...and then, the rest as they say is history, his next six yeras took into the HOF and reduced his lfetime ERA to 2.76.

The Yankees are showing patience now and Cashman has got to convicne the Trogs to let him continue this strategy. Again, I do not see the proclamtion as for Cashman to ransom the future at all costs but rather if there is a deal out there and you need a so called jewel to finish the deal off, then do it.

and yes this is my version of cliff notes, yee-haw! later gots stuff to be done.

Leave the Minor Leagues be. We got great players from our system last time around. Pettitte, Jeter, Bernie, Posada, Rivera. When you give them a chance, they can work out. They dont need the pressure of worrying about being traded all the time. Kennedy in my opinion is tradeable. Hughes no, Jackson no, Melanchon no, Brackman no. I can go on. They are 3.5 back. Get a decent a level pitcher and they are set.
