Affliction eyes next show date

Posted: Wednesday July 23, 2008 08:52AM ET

With Affliction's first show in the books, the organization has already turned the focus to its next one. When asked by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) for a definitive date and location -- a question he was undoubtedly asked dozens of time throughout this past weekend -- Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio simply smiled and offered what he could. "When? The beginning of November," Atencio said. "Where? We haven't finalized that yet. We're still looking at a couple different locations." As expected, Affliction will use many of the fighters that took part in this past Saturday's "Affliction: Banned" debut show at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Now boasting the majority of the world's top-10 heavyweight fighters, Atencio said the big guys will again be on display in November. One other possibility is Aleksander Emelianenko. The Russian fighter, a PRIDE veteran and the younger brother of Fedor Emelianenko, was scratched from the event just minutes before he was headed to the scale for weigh-ins.

MMA is still a fake sport for aggrivated frustrated frat boys.....DUUHHHH, ME LIKE TO FIGHT!!!

I heard he got scratched from his fight because of Hepatitis B....... Affliction won't be around long if it has to wait 4 months between events and has the same 8 guys fight one another. Arlovski against Fedor would be a sweet fight

But, if the 2nd big PPV event goes over big, he can get a network deal worked out and make it a weekly event

Fedor said he wants to fight 2 more times this year

And Fedor hasn't fought anyone since Dec 31 (ha)

Affliction will have to start getting some other fighters on their cards and having events more than every 3 or 4 months to stay in business. You can talk trash about Dana White all you want, but the guy has a point. These guys might just end up spending all their money to make these events happen and sink themselves. UFC still has the best fighters in the world, spanning multiple weightclasses. All we've pretty much seen from Affliction is heavyweights. UFC needs to buy out these heavyweights and rebuild their HW division.

The UFC definitely needs to build up their heavyweight class. I wonder why Fedor never came to the UFC? They won't survive on just heavyweights.

I guess it appears to be a race now to get Urijah Faber between Affliction and the UFC......If they will have a featherweight division.

If you think about it, Fedor wouldn't really have that many people to fight in the UFC HW division. They need to bring in more than just fedor, competition for everyone not just one fighter.

As for Urijah Faber, the guy is definitely a beast and a poster boy for conditioning. He is with WEC though which is a part of UFC. The only reason you dont see Faber on UFC is because of his weight class.

How great was that fight between Faber and Pulver! That should have been the showcase fight of that weekend, instead of that terrible Kimbo Slice EliteXC one.

You know Pulver and Faber would go back to the UFC if they would add the featherweight division. And some people from lightweight might would compete in featherweight.

Think about it....
Featherweight is 136lb to 145lb
Lightweight is 145-155

Faber fights at 144.5 pounds....

I want to sign 8 fighters, set them up to fight once every 3~4 months and get a PPV deal out of it.

I fully agree. I think that had that WEC event been broadcast on the level that EliteXC was, it would have opened alot of people's eyes to MMA in the right way. Instead you get a brawler with pretty little or no MMA experience fighting a guy who had lost like his last 3 or 4 fights. Top it off with the fact that dude apparently hadn't drained his ear for YEARS, and the fact that Kimbo didnt defend himself from those elbows for about a minute and a half and still no stoppage, and you have yourself a garbage event. The only good that came from that event was the Smith-Lawler fight. Other than that it just gave the MMA haters more ammo.

The WEC card on the other hand was awesome. Not only was the Faber-Pulver fight an awesome fight, but I think the Maeda-Torres fight was just as good if not a bit better because of the fighters skill range. Maeda-Torres is still one of my favorite fights of 2008. The undercard was still good, with the exception of that one sleeper at the beginning.

Yes the Maeda-Torres fight was awesome.

Now Smith-Lawler 2 is about to happen, and that should be another good fight

Way to early for that. These guys can only fight every so often and the roster in not even close enough to deep enough to go monthly, nevermind weekly.

they need to sign a few more fighters in other weight classes before they can be a legit competition for the UFC.
