Yanks playing chicken with Mariners

The Yankees' acquisition of Bobby Abreu went so well two years ago they are trying to recreate it now with Jarrod Washburn. The ploy works like this: The Yanks locate a player who fills a need, a very expensive player whose contract does not expire until after the following season. The player's current team badly wants to excise the contract. There is just one team, however, with the financial heft to absorb the money. So the Yanks say they will assume every penny, but in exchange will give up marginal prospects, at best. The Yanks have told Seattle they will take on the $13 million-plus left on Washburn through next year, but to do that the Mariners will get no better than a Grade C-type prospect. For now, Seattle is refusing that offer. A game of chicken is ongoing, and all indications are the Yanks will see if the Mariners blink at the deadline as the Phillies did in 2006.

I wonder how much air time ESPN will devote today to the possible earth shattering Yankee acquisition of Jarrod Washburn? Why is it every time the Yankees go dumpster diving, it's news?

Get rid of Ponson!!!!!!!!!!! I'd rather stomach another Ian Kennedy attempt at the majors than watching Ponson try to beat good hitting.

What you expect from Fictionnation.com..........Professional writers and editors? Hardly :/ Junk/trashing reposting of useless and totally BS stories. How much do they make a year? And what are the education backgrounds? Well maybe their daily earnings per day is 6.50 a hour with a bonus for ever click for the story the put up on this less then professional sport site:/ Their education background is 1 year of PR and 1 year of reporting. ( which leads use to the next questen ) do they have a degree is Jour??????????) :/

Good business. Makes sense to me.

Got to give Cashman credit-
he has handled things pretty well-

Washburn is NOT a big deal for us......
yes we need a starter- but only until Wang comes back.
so basically for a month

No reason to give up ANY top prospects
(maybe we can fleece ichiro out of them)

July 28, 2008  09:35 AM ET

I would not offer much either...

July 28, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Wish we had him last night against the Sox...Yanks are playing Bery Bery goo beisbol right now

Prediction: Washburn starts for the Yanks on Sunday against the Angels...and probably loses.

July 28, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Get him for little, or don't get him. Good plan, stick to it.

The National economy and personal finances are going to hell and the Yankees are once again spending like drunken sailors. Is there any doubt as to why the organization is so hated?
On the other hand...nice pick up.
