Sanchez may play in USC's opener

It was supposed to serve as the final proving ground for USC quarterbacks Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain in their competition to possibly replace injured starter Mark Sanchez. It still might, but today's scrimmage at the Coliseum looks more like a stage to decide who could be Sanchez's backup. On Wednesday, Sanchez took another step toward returning for the Aug. 30 opener at Virginia, participating in 7-on-7 passing drills for the first time since suffering a dislocated left kneecap Aug. 8. If the junior has no setbacks, he will participate in all drills next week and probably start the opener. "He looked terrific," Coach Pete Carroll said.

Do you honestly think Coach Carroll would say "Sanchez sucked in practice, our season will probably be a joke this year..." I highly doubt it.

USC could run you or me out there at QB and their season still wouldn't be a joke.. they have probably the best defense in the nation and enough good RBs where they don't even need to throw the ball much

What the hell is going on here with this USC camp??? One day it's all doom, the next day everything is fine. I can't take it. Get me to Aug. 30 and away from this ridiculous media swarm of misinformation.

the question is will he preform when the ohio state shows up... i dont think so...

trojans are a great team but have had some costly injuries as of late.. that will cost them dearly.

ohio state wins in a battle

As someone who doesn't any partcular allegiance to either OSU or USC I am really looking forward to sitting down with a few "cold ones" and watchng a terrific football game!

Oops...I meant doesn't HAVE any particular allegiance

I still think they should limit Sanchez and go with Mustain here. It's UVA. USC should beat them even with backups. Keep Sanchez healthy for Ohio State.

August 21, 2008  11:51 AM ET

As long as Stafon Johnson is starting, they'll be alright.

August 21, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Look, I hate to be a doubter.... I'm a huge USC fan.... but half of last year's team is now playing Sundays..... they lost a lot of big time talent, plus the injuries..... and I'm not comfortable with Sanchez and if Mustain can't beat out Sanchez, then obviously he's not the answer either..... I'm thinking 9-3 this season and maybe next year will be the monster year..... Still I think USC will beat Ohio State and expose them before subjecting the world to another championship game prat fall.....

USC is favored by 19 over Virginia in the opener. Anybody have thoughts on that game - with or without Sanchez? What's the word out of SC on his playing in the game or not?

Supposedly Virginia doesn't have much this year..... even on the road, I doubt this will be much of a game..... if it is, it's a bad omen for the rest of the year.... That said, it would be hard to turn down the 19 points as a home dog....

August 21, 2008  02:40 PM ET

No doubt Mustain or Corp needs to play at UVA. It would be a good game for one of them to get under their belt and "see how well they do in a live" and let Sanchez keep practicing and better heal up the knee for the OHIO ST game. MOST cfb analysists have Ohio St beating USC. Yet Vegas has them favored in that game, although it is still far off.

August 21, 2008  02:49 PM ET

Sir Robin I agree about a 19 point home dog, but without seeing USC this season that line worries me. Unsure if USC is a dominant team or just a very good team this season. One thing is for sure - they have a SICK defense.

August 21, 2008  02:53 PM ET

BIGMAC74 - where did you see a line on the OSU-USC game?? I'm assuming SC is favored by 3? I like Ohio State to not only cover, but to win the game. Seems similar situation to a few years ago when OSU went into Texas as underdogs and won. Word out of Columbus is that Pryor looks great.

LOL. How come that just seems so plausible?

Home team usually gets 3 for the home field advantage, you could read it as a push at this point. I'll take OSU and the points thanks...
