Gibbs fans quick with excuses
Never have I heard so many "the dog ate my homework" excuses as I have this week from fans who don't think Joe Gibbs Racing did anything wrong by trying to outwit NASCAR's dyno testing at Michigan. Not a living soul who works in the management of the team has said anything other than it was embarrassed that somebody would stoop to using magnetic shims to try to prevent the throttle from being opened 100 percent so a true dyno reading could be obtained. That, however, didn't stop fans from dreaming up all forms of alternative versions of that truth. The shims were there all along during the race so the car couldn't be "overdriven" into the corner, some said, allowing drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano to ease into the corner more smoothly. Yeah, that's right. Stewart and Logano need so much "help" in driving the cars so some genius devised this poor man's version of traction control. If flies in the face of logic to believe the No. 18 and No. 20 cars raced with horsepower-limiting devices on their throttles, but that hasn't stopped some fans from arguing that a) that had to be what happened since teams weren't allowed to touch the car after the race and b) since the car raced that way, it's perfectly legitimate for it to be tested that way on the dyno. First of all, the idea that cars selected for dyno testing could be isolated from crews getting near them after a race is absurd. How did the cars get from pit road or the garage to the dyno? Did NASCAR levitate them? No, they were pushed by the team. I don't know how the shims got in the cars. I do know that anybody who assumes the drivers had to be in on it is making a cockeyed leap to judgment. But ultimately it doesn't matter how or why. What matters is the shims where there and NASCAR found them. What matters is that by trying to defeat NASCAR's dyno test, the team showed disregard for NASCAR's authority to officiate the sport and disrespect for fellow competitors.

Oh geesh. I can see this thread blowing up. First off, I'm a Jr fan, but on any given week, I'll root for about anybody (everyone knows Jr has a hard time putting a race together, no?).
I, for one, feel like having Toyota in nascar is a good thing. More competition means Chevy, Ford, and Dodge will have to keep stepping things up another notch or two - and hopefully not drive any of them out of the sport. Still, the Toyota engine is a newer engine than what everybody else is running, from what I understand, so I feel like NASCAR really found themselves in a bind with the extra horsepower the Toyota motors were creating. It's great to see a team finding some more speed, but is that because NASCAR gave Toyota too long a leash? Who knows. Hopefully NASCAR can figure out how to handle it well, and maybe clue the rest of the general public in on it it - they've been a bit too secretive recently, imho.
Anyway, somebody cheated here, obviously, or attempted to and cheaters get fined when they get caught, end of story. I hope that had it been any other team in the garage - yes even HMS - NASCAR would have dealt out the same penalties, maybe even something harsher if it had been, say the #48 or #29 with a recent history of blurring the lines.
JGR has always been a pretty stand-up place, so I find it hard to believe this was done with the approval of the owners or the drivers. Just my two cents, though.

Always watch out for a guy that thinks he is
Holier than the rest of us Gibbs has shown
his true colors. He's a cheat,then blames
somebody else in his crew.
Have a good day.

That is why people are called 'Fans"....short for Fanatic. No matter what is said about "their" driver, they will defend them to the end because in their eyes they can do no wrong. IMO 80% of the fans have blinders on when it comes to their drivers. I don't consider myself one of them. For instance, if Harvick was to get caught cheating...I wouldn't be surprised in the least. He has been having a marginal season and if he needs to get a boost somehow, go for it. But I know he wouldn't make excuses should he get caught. That just seems to be his fabric. In turn, I wouldn't voice that I think he was ok in doing it....you cheat you pay the price. No Excuses. But if he gets away with it, more power to him...sometimes you have to look for performance "elsewhere" to get the edge you need to win.

Ol' Smokey used to say -- "It ain't cheatin' unless you get caught" ... I think the TURDs bite the bone but agree they just got caught and they are probably not the only teams "stretchin' the rules". Through the years I have watched and admired Coach Gibbs and I seriously believe he had no prior knowledge of this BS.

JGR just plainly got caught this time around. I am humored how quickly Joe and JD threw various of their employees "under the bus." Of course they are expendable, but the pioty of it all almost made me throw up. We can never forget this is JGR and they are above cheating, etc, etc, etc...yeah right!

It's a NASCAR thread, it's not going to blow up, haha.
But yeah, I mean...you cheat, you pay the piper. Why is this even a story?

If you haven't cheated, then complain. if you have cheated, zip it.
I don't hear any other teams, drivers, crew chiefs or owners complaining.

Joe, that is true. But also it really doesn't come down to the driver. It is the crews that are being shifty. Kyle Busch might be percieved as less than trustworthy but in all reality is it him that is maintaining the ride? If he was to get popped he would get the hit in the way of points when he most lkely knew nothing of what his Crew Chief was doing.

Let me throw this one at you all, I think you will remember it:
"I'm going to give you an engine low to the ground.
An extra-big oil pan that'll cut the wind underneath you.
That'll give you - more horsepower.
I'll give you a fuel line that'll hold an extra gallon of gas.
I'll shave half an inch off you and shape you like a bullet.
When I get you primed, painted and weighed...
...you're going to be ready to go out on that racetrack.
You're going to be perfect." - Harry Hogge
Probably one of the most inspirational points in any sports movie, especially for a NASCAR fan. What was he doing....he was telling basically how he was going to cheat to get the win. We love cheaters because that shows they care and are willing to push the envelope to get the win.

You have this article summarized. I could tell by the long drawn out point. I like Poole occassionally, but sometimes I have to change Sirius because of the 15 second pauses between thoughts/sentences. I already read this this morning - its so yesterday.

Here is an excuse, we're faster than everybody and we want to remain that way, winning is good and the money is better so we tried to slip one past Nascar.
They deserved what they got.
