Knicks trade for Patrick Ewing Jr.
If symbolism alone could change the Knicks' fortunes, then the minor trade they made Friday would make them instant contenders. In a deal with the Houston Rockets, the Knicks acquired Patrick Ewing Jr. - the son of one of their greatest players - in exchange for the rights to Frederic Weis, a towering symbol of the franchise's decline. A former star at Georgetown, Ewing shares his father's name and college pedigree, but not his athletic prowess. He will be a long shot to win a roster spot when the Knicks hold training camp in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in October. A 6-foot-8 forward, Ewing was drafted in the second round, 43rd over all, by the Sacramento Kings in June. He was sent to Houston as part of the Ron Artest trade earlier this month. The Knicks now have 16 players under contract, one more than the maximum.

..."a towering symbol of the franchise's decline." He should fit perfectly amongst the other "not ready for prime time players." Talk about biased reporting--wonder where the Times got the idea that a 6 points a game player off the bench was a "star" at Georgetown.

This guy was not a star at Georgetown and probably can't even find a team to make in the NBA.

First: I did not know the Knicks still held Frederic Weis' rights. Why the hell didn't they deal his rights sooner?
Second: Happy for Ewing Jr. but if this kid doesn't make the roster, then this is a move I don't get.

Not his athletic prowess? Wait a minute. This kid is twice the athlete his father was. Pat Sr. could barely get off the floor even in his prime.
I wasn't much of a Knick fan growing up but I won't hate on Ewing Sr. He was loved in the City...even when he screwed up.

I really like Ewing Jr. he has a great attitude. I just don't see that he developed enough all-around game to complement his athleticism. I hope he sticks because he can't play worse that that cast of characters the Knicks have.
As far as Frederic Weis...Who in the world would want his rights unless they want to mass produce posters of him being "posterized" by Vince Carter at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Basketball Tournament. This is really scary that an NBA team wants him...

With the moves the Rockets have made this off-season, what in the world do they want with Weis? Even if they're sceptical about signing Mutombo, Weis seems more a waste of time. "The Dunk" tells you all you need to know about him.

Who would want the rights to this dude. That's why he's still playing in Europe.

The moment Stoop Layden took Weis over Artest was the moment things took a terrible turn for the worst.

Weis will never play in the NBA. I was just shocked that the Knicks still had his rights.

If your 48 year old father than still probably beat your arse one on one, you should probably reconsider your career choices, go back to college , and get your degree.

i just hope his game is not based only on his athletisicm i just think that he moved up in the draft 1. because of his name 2. because of the 42 inch vertical (thats probably a heck of alot more than eddy curry can do i bet that) but with that knicks bench anything could happen, but if you only get 6 points a game in college or even less how are you even drafted (BIG HINT TOWARDS AJINCA AND THE BOBCATS)

Hope he does well, but if he's with the Knicks who knows. Nobody does that well with the Knicks......not to mention they've stunk the last 2 or 3 years as far as im concerned. Oh well that's better for my teams lol.

The Rockets did this out of respect for PE as they did not want to cut his son. Walsh knew this and he took advantage of it. The Rockets were more than happy to trade him to NY. Its not about what they got for him. This was good for both teams. He's got more of a shot of making the team in NY than in Houston. The Rockets did him a favor. Because of his name the Knicks are going to give him every opportunity to make the team. Its only a matter of time before PE comes to NY as an assistant; We all know Curry needs him really bad.
