Suns: Marion in, Thomas out

Shawn Marion appears likely to stay with the Suns. The same cannot be said about Kurt Thomas, who appears to be the focus of the Suns' attempt to shave payroll.

Someone is using their head in Pheonix... how could you justify trading Marion? Forget the money, suck it up and produce a ring. Everyone will forget about the money then.

What can they get for Thomas??????????????

June 13, 2007  10:49 AM ET

They should trade Nash while he's still got some worth,... after next season he will be too old and the Suns will be stuck with him.

Regarding Marion,... highly over-rated,.. Shoots like a female kangaroo with very low shooting percentage anywhere outside of the paint.

I couldnt believe he actually thinks he has what it takes to be a francise player.

June 13, 2007  10:55 AM ET

Marion is the highest paid Suns Player last season. But he's about 3rd on the list in talent, behind Amare/Nash. I would keep Marion, but I'm sure that the $$ situation is playing in the back of their minds.

I dont know how you get rid of Banks or Thomas, and what in the world happened to DIAW this season?? Boris-where'd ya go man?

I think the pg of the future for the suns is going to be Barbosa, he'll continue to put up Tony Parker #'s.

They could get Haywood. Or Dalembert (if they pack both their first round picks to Philly). If the Suns want young studs, they could trade Thomas and their draft picks to Chicago for the 9th (drafting Thornton, a Marion in the making) or a middle-round draft pick, if they find somebody who needs an expiring contract.
Anyway, I think the whole thing is garbage. PHX is stuck as an almost-contender until they drop Stoudemire, and his so-called defense, for a good shot-blocker and post-defender... I would say; trade n.1 (and a draft pick, if needed) to Charlotte and get Okafor and Wallace!

June 13, 2007  11:12 AM ET

why would the bulls get stuck with kurt thomas when guys like zach randolph are still available. anyway it seems the suns are prime to get young talents with their surplus of picks

Man I can't believe some of the trade ideas here. First Marion is way over rated! Trade him to Chicago or Boston . He is not the main man in Phoenix. He is only a marginal shooter and plays ok defense. He dissapears come crunch time. Trade him get some players who could help off the bench and get a draft pick and package them for a real player. And then take Boston's or Chicago's pick and package it with their own picks and the one they get from the trade and sent those to Portland or Seattle for the 1st or 2nd pick. They could also add the pick for next year from Atlanta which will be a top 10 pick for sure.Get a big man to help out Stoudemire and sign Grant Hill to provide the bench scoring! Just a thought.

Trading Nash is completely out of the question. It's just as asinine as any ideas of trading Kobe Bryant.

Marion's shot may look as ridiculous as described, but that unorthodox shot does go in enough to make him a solid, dependable contributor. He's not a jump shooter like your boy or Paul Pierce. He's a slasher and, more appropriately, a junk basket player. Therefore, his shot doesn't need to be pretty, but merely effective. If it goes in, it still counts for at least two points.

like the saying goes ???you don???t know what you have until you lose it???, the Suns would find that with Marion

June 13, 2007  12:46 PM ET

I like the idea of keeping Marion if he isn't going to get into a p1ss1ng match with Stoudamire. But lets face reality what are we really going to get in return for thomas?? just a different overpriced Center? Might as well keep him so when we do play teams with big centers he can D them up even though he does slow down the offense.

June 13, 2007  12:56 PM ET

That is a very smart move on their part. Nash Amarie, and Marion work great with each other you dont want to break that up.

June 13, 2007  01:19 PM ET

Thomas guards Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki better than any other Sun. The Suns need to think about making it past Dallas and San Antonio - two teams that are clearly better than Phoenix. Thomas gives them a better chance than Marion.

June 13, 2007  01:30 PM ET

Don Nelson just finished showing the world how to guard Nowitzki, and it has nothing to do with big men. As for Tim Duncan, please don't tell me you were serious about Kurt Thomas being able to guard him?

The Suns will be perfectly fine without Kurt.

June 13, 2007  01:35 PM ET

Thomas may be able to guard bigger post players, but there's not one other player on the Suns that can fill Marion's shoes even half way. Diaw does okay, but he's not the high energy slasher or rebounder Marion is, nor is he even remotely as good as a defender.

Thomas was severely winded during the game he was forced to play a majortiy of minutes due to Stoudamire and Diaw being suspended. There's no way he can keep that up. He's a half court, medium tempo player at best. He also doesn't have the versatility to guard smaller, faster wing players like Marion regularly guards.

I'd hate to see Thomas go (Marion, either), but he's the more logical choise between the two.

June 13, 2007  01:37 PM ET

how about Amare, Kurt and this year first round draft pick for KG or throw in another play Bank..

what do you think?

June 13, 2007  01:53 PM ET

Pheonix needs to do something. San Antonio will be a little older next year, but they are not going to just stiffen up and die. Duncan has several more years where he will be a good still ( and several after that where he will fade), so Pheonix will still have to get by them or Dallas in the future. They can't do it the way they are now, so they need to make a change.

Don't give up Amare, as he will need to be the franchise after Nash burns out (he too has several more seasons in him, but not all at the hectic pace he plays now). Marion is more expendable and several players could provide the dirty work he gives the team if not the all-around talent and skills (Lee in new York for example). Thomas gives them something that no one else on the roster can: 1 on 1 defense against the plethora of bigs in the west. If it's not Duncan it will be Boozer, or Nene, or Yao, or KG or Greg Oden, etc. Thomas might slow the offense, but he can still hit the mid-range jumper and provide offense in this system. He his an essential part of this team that will be hard to replace if he is shipped out.

Move MArion in the end, get a young energy player for a fraction for a fraction of the cost. I think the Knicks would easily give up Lee for Marion, or you could get Varajao from Cleveland. Nocioni could eb a possibilty too.

All this cracks me up, they were one 2 suspensions away from winning the whole thing this year, the ship isn't broken my friends.

June 13, 2007  02:28 PM ET

The T-Wolves would be foolish to re-acquire Banks. There's a reason he was traded before, and I'm certain they don't want him back. If he goes, it'll be along with draft picks.

June 13, 2007  02:28 PM ET

i would like to bring up the subject of coach d'antoni, I'm actually more worried about his style than anything else - main flaw? He doesn't develop a bench - come playoffs like when they were two man down against the Spurs, the Suns went up by twenty and d'antoni kept Nash-Thomas- EVERYONE IN FACT - in the game. Why not throw in Burke for five minutes and have him punish Duncan? Obviously not getting Atlanta killed a trade that oculd have sent Marion and a high draft pick to Minnesota for KG - a great fit for the team. But now? I don't know. Might be a retread year. This hurts me to no end.

NBAallTheWay -Trade Nash? Seriously? If they did, you would probably lead the wagon saying how they sucked and that they never should have done it.... And who cares if his shot is ugly... It goes through the hoop right?
