Newest Sixer knows his role

Donyell Marshall knows he won't be the 76ers' go-to guy this season. The 6-foot-9 power forward, who signed a veteran minimum contract Tuesday, understands the man above him on the depth chart - two-time all-star Elton Brand - will get the lion's share of the minutes. That's fine with Marshall. But when he does get in, he knows his role: spread the floor and make shots. Marshall said his main role, other than knocking down open shots, will be tutoring younger frontcourt players such as Thaddeus Young, Marreese Speights and Jason Smith.

Not a bad pick up for the minimum. He is basically a spot up shooter. He just needs to wait outside the arc when Brand gets double teamed in the low post.

Was he a go to guy anywhere?

He's a decent player. A nice guy on a team but certianly not a go to guy.

as a reading, pa native its good to see him back home

September 4, 2008  09:28 AM ET

the sixers are looking so nice this season

Solid pickup but he might be a better backup SF since the Sixer have Evans to back up Brand......He could play PF when they want a 3-shooting PF to spread the defense but I would use him as a backup to Young at SF and play Iggy at SG, bringing Rush and Green off the bench so they are a deeper team

Depth is key whn you have injuries and a PF that played 8 games last season......

For minimum $ -- no real downside
that being said- I'd have spent the money on a young guy who potentially could develop into something

Good pick-up. He could help - not much but still...
It's for the minimum anyway.

Both talented youth and a great mix of vets, crazy athletic and depth at every position... Oooo they're looking good. Save a high seed in the playoffs for them, the Atlantic is easily theirs.

"spent money on a young guy who potentially could develop into something"

they have young allstars on the roster developing already, they need veterans to play consistant instead of developing more people. championship contention is more important than development

September 4, 2008  06:10 PM ET

The 76ers and the Blazers are the scariest young team in the NBA. It doen't hurt to add veteran help especially at the minimum. He did a good job with the Cavs two years ago but struggled with his jumper last year. If he can get his 3 point stroke going he'll be an excellent pick up for Philly.

September 4, 2008  06:40 PM ET

I am not sure how this signing helps the Sixers...It is not like Marshall is the role model type...I think they have veteran leadership already in Elton Brand... what they really needed was some backcourt help....

September 4, 2008  06:50 PM ET

That signing is a no brainer... Being a Knick fan I'm down with any team that signs a player that does not play defense. I think they should have gone for a veteran big bruiser... or a raw talent to develop... He can't guard anybody and please don't ever make him play small forward... The small forwards in the league will blow past him like crazy...

September 4, 2008  08:22 PM ET

I don't think they got him for his defense or his leadership. They got him for his shooting to help stretch the court. Now if he can't shoot then they just wasted their money.

100% with you on that one. Marshalls best days are waaaaay behind him and I'd rather see the teams develop more young players and find a 'diamond' once in a while. Maybe Donyell's a locker room guy but it seems to me that this squad is full of those?
