Ocho Cinco will cost mucho dinero

Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco is learning first-hand how seriously the NFL takes its ability to license players and their names. Before he can wear a jersey with his new surname emblazoned on the back, he first must buy every "C. Johnson" jersey for sale nationwide. And there are thousands of "C. Johnson" replica jerseys available, with a production cost of about $48 apiece. "When a player requests a name change or a number change, the player is responsible for that unsold inventory," NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said.

Whichever random exec or lawyer thought to include that clause in the contracts deserves a piece of that action. Ocho's doing to have to fork out about $250,000.

who cares

September 10, 2008  02:28 PM ET

actually inventory numbers i read this morning puts the cost between 750,000 and 1.2 million.

but it did leave me wondering, when was the last time the NFL/Reebok blocked a trade until one team bought all the old jerseys. Did the Jets have to buy all the old packer favre jerseys?

I'm smelling something here and it is ripe.

LOL it's what the ahole deserves. The man has talent, but he needs to work on his attitude.

September 10, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Oh my, well that wasnt' thought fully through was it "quatre-vingt cinque"! Stimpy...you iiiiiddddiotttt!!

September 10, 2008  02:34 PM ET

the NFL should fine him if he puts Johnson on the back of his game jersey.
after all league rules force you to use your legal sir name diring the game.

September 10, 2008  02:36 PM ET

i didn't get to watch the game, did he punch the Raven player in the mouth as promised?

September 10, 2008  02:43 PM ET

It shows how immature he is in the sport and nobody really cares for him. He just wants attention and probably thought is was a cool idea. I think this is going to backfire on him.

Imagine his kids, if he already has one will they change their last name to "Ocho Cinco"? They'll probably be made fun of in school.

September 10, 2008  02:45 PM ET

NFL are a bunch of morons.
They would make more off the new jersey sales...

September 10, 2008  02:46 PM ET

No, the NFL doesn't mind about team changes. This is different - Chad changing his name and staying on the same team. Had he swapped teams and changed his name at the same time, it would have been fine.

ok, this is driving me nuts, how do you navigate quickly between the threads without going to the nfl TNR home page?

just seeing how the quote button works

He's still just an egotistic dumbass who is trying to ruffle feathers in Bengal camp. That said, he probably also knows that if he forks out the loot to buy the "old" jerseys, then there's gonna be a fortune made on the sales of his new "Ocho Cinco" jerseys. We get reminded of it every day when we see the kids line up to purchase some arrogant, ungrateful athletes gear.

I have to agree! There would be alot more sales of the new jersey than they will ever sell of his old one.

September 10, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Haha what's he going to do with all those Jerseys once he buys them?

September 10, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Is it too late to change his name back?

I agree with you here something is not right !!!!!!

September 10, 2008  03:47 PM ET

This is ridiculous. His legal name was changed, as is his right as an American, albeit a slightly crazy one. Unless this is in the collective bargaining agreement, he would have a good case to legally force the NFL to change their mind on this one.

September 10, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Well that was short lived. lol

September 10, 2008  04:29 PM ET

This is a little ridiculous. The NFL should just eat the charges... they make plenty of money. On top of that, they're concerned with Replicas? Really? They could just peel the name off the back and re-screen print it! Lame.... awful story.
