Lions owner's son: Millen should go

When the owner's son says he thinks you should be canned, you might want to pull out your suitcase. Bill Ford Jr. is no stranger to the media. He oversees one of the largest car companies in the world. When he wants to say something, he does. And his remarks Monday after the Lions' third straight loss were as subtle as a bowling ball rolling toward daisies. "It was an embarrassment," he said. "The fans deserve better. And if I had the authority, I would have fired the general manager." He said it to a small group of reporters, then repeated the idea minutes later to a larger group. This was no accident, folks. He knew Lions president and CEO Matt Millen would read it.

Has anybody ever noticed that the Cowboys have Ford logos all over their backdrop for their press conferences and post game interviews? It seems like the Lions should be the team supported by Ford. If the Lions win even 6 games a season they exceed my expectations. Even with merchandising, you see more people in Michigan with Packers, Bears, Vikings, Steelers, Cowboys, etc. clothes and merchandise than people wearing their Lions hats and shirts. Come on Mr. Ford, Let someone else who really wants a winner buy the team and bring back the respect of the Lions in the early days of the teams 75 years!!!

OMG, I shocked! Millen should go?? Really?? Wow, this is just shocking news!

Millen's been needing to go for like 5 years now...

Neeeexxxxxtt story.

Today from the "It's a No Brainer Department" comes this gem of a story about Matt Millen. One would think he himself could see that he is doing a very poor job and needs to go.

I think the optimal phrase in that entire article is, "if I had the authority, I would have fired the general manager". It only matters if Daddy is listening.

The real; question is, "Can daddy hear?"

Give him some time, he's still learning. . .

September 23, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Bill Ford Jr. has thought this / hinted at this for years now... he has yet to be so blunt about it though... Thankfully for SE michigan, its Jr. thats leading the company, otherwise we'd be more screwed than we already are...

September 23, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Honestly, this is a big day for Lions fans... it could mark the beginning of the end. Or it could just add to the frustration of it all when Ford keeps him around, again!

September 23, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Albom makes a good point in the article, it leaves out one important point, Ford Jr. did not go far enough and call for the removal of Ford. Sr.... Millen has only been around for a few years of the 50 years of mediocrity... but certainly, that would be a great start.

And finally, for the first time, Ford field has yet to sell out. Ford Sr. will sadly notice that before he realizes his Lions are 0-3....

Fire Millen. Hire Cowher.

September 23, 2008  08:38 AM ET

millen should have been gone the second draft he went after a wide out in the 1st round.

There you go again, thinking like a normal person...

You gotta think like a Ford...

Nothing like stating the obvious. But, at least its the first on the record acknowledgement from the Ford camp.

If "the Jaw" comes back, it's to coach and he's too smart to go to the Lions.

Cower, if he comes back, will be to coach. He's too smart to take the Lion's job.

Someone just get rid of the guy! It's bad enough that he himself is the joke he is but the franchise has just become a bigger joke then him form all of this!
It's terrible...

September 23, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Still looking good this morning Pens I see!

Fair enough. All Ford has to do is cross the street to Cheli's, and he'll find about 40 people that would be more knowledgeable and do better than Millen.

I guarantee you that if Ford wants Cowher, he will get him. The problem is IF Ford wants him, i heard he's not a great dinner date.

And i dont know why anyone would not want this job. The job security is second to none, with an owner that has a pretty open check book.
