Petty Enterprises pushing Kyle out

Was this #45-Kyle Petty's last race for Petty Enterprises? Sunday's Kansas 400 looks like it might well have been his last Sprint Cup run for the family business that he's worked for for so many years, that his grandfather Lee founded in 1949 and that his father Richard has been running all these years. That pending departure-not of Kyle Petty's own doing-is the stunning word from Patti Petty, Kyle's wife. Kyle Petty has been the center of a family storm of controversy since the spring, and he insists he doesn't think he's part of the long-running problems at Petty Enterprises. And Patti Petty says her husband is determined to stay at the wheel of a Cup car.....for someone. There are indications that Michael McDowell, currently driving for Michael Waltrip's Toyota operation, and AJ Allmendinger, currently driving for Team Red Bull, are under consideration for the Petty ride, as teammate with Bobby Labonte.

Hate to see it, but its about time.

He's long done as a driver, but my Lord. Just cut out his heart and stomp on it, why don't they. This is still a Petty. I'd like to see him treated with a little more respect than we're seeing here.

Petty has been done for years but refuses to let go. You have to do something to build winners. If he cared about his company he would manage and realize his personal feelings should be gone. Do what is best for others. Sadly he wants to carry the name and like so many athletes do something that he cannot do anymore.

It's sad but I did predict this a few months ago. The minute Petty hooked up with the big money backer, it was inevitable. The love and loyalty is gone now and it is all bottom line. Follow the money.

"That pending departure-not of Kyle Petty's own doing-is the stunning word from Patti Petty, Kyle's wife."

Am I the only one who rolls their eyes when they hear of a wife/mother complaining to the media about what's going to happen to their husband/son in the sporting world?

September 29, 2008  10:19 AM ET

You had to think it might come with the change of majority ownership. I have to believe that the 45 car might run better if A. J. was driving it.

September 29, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Well maybe they won't push him out until he atleast stops the car, now that would SUX

"And Patti Petty says her husband is determined to stay at the wheel of a Cup car.....for someone." Can't tell if "for someone" means he'd drive for someone else, or if she's trying not to say "for Adam." While I don't wish on anyone what they've had to live with - after eight years he needs to transition "honoring Adam" from Dad driving the #45 car at the back of the pack, to Dad getting the ship turned upright and maybe gettin the #45 car to victory lane in the next few years.

Kyle has become better at the business part of racing then behind the wheel. I think in the long run this will be best for Petty Enterprise...

September 29, 2008  11:51 AM ET

did i miss something but isn't Kyle the President of Petty??? if anyone is taking him out of the car it would be him.. he had said that he was ready more move on to do more things... they are opening another camp of kids, and that is great.. i hope that they look at Allmendinger for the ride and not McDowell..

September 29, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Let's see how Patti is behind the wheel, hell, Kyle drives like a woman anyways!

September 29, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Whines like one too!

September 29, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Shades of Dale Jr leaving DEI! I like Kyle, but he's done as a competitive driver. He may be able to drive 200mph without wrecking, but he's far from a threat to win. Boston Ventures should give him 4 rides a year or something l like that for a year and then phase him into the booth. They could show some class, $ or not.

September 29, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Has he ever won a race? Or is he just liveing of his daddys past?

September 29, 2008  02:14 PM ET

He could run in the Nationwide series with the non-Rusty Wallaces.

September 29, 2008  04:26 PM ET

Farted.

September 29, 2008  04:42 PM ET

Kyle has 8 wins in his 30yr career, Thunderdragon. Last one was in 1995 at Dover..led 271 laps even! Guy's made $32Million dollars during that time....

September 29, 2008  05:10 PM ET

Under the new chase format, Kyle Petty would have won the championship in 1992...but that was 16 years ago! Kyle Petty IS done, should be done racing but he isn't the entire problem. Look at Babby Labonte, he is still a very good driver but he isn't doing well driving for Petty. Something else is amiss. There isn't one Dodge in the chase this year and next year will be even worse with Dodge cutting its investment in racing.
