Yes they can. It's called a "Non-compete claise." Companies place them in contracts all the time. If the Packers still hold the rights to Favre under contract and he does not submit his reinstatement papers to the NFL to be reactivated for a possible trade, then the Packers are perfectly within their rights to exercise the "non-compete clause" and take the salary cap hit to keep him inactive.

Of course they can put a clause in the contract but I can pretty much guarantee that there is no clause in Favre's contract which says he cannot play for the Vikings or any division rival.

let's assume you have a job.... you retire, have a party, get a gold watch...then six months later you decide you want to come back. Do you think your company would take you back at the same position and salary as before? Or do you think they would say, "sorry, we filled your position after you retired"....

Couldn't agree with you more buddy. But they definitely cannot say 'well since you retired with us we also do not want you to work anywhere else and if we fail to stop you, we want you to work where we see fit, like that second tier competitor to make sure you cannot challenge us'

All you whiny talentless a**holes slamming on Brett should just go shove it. He has a contract and is entitled to play until his contract is done. He is the best QB in the organization so is entitled to start. If GB wants to start AR they should let him go where he wants because they are the ones who won't start him. Why should he retire? Because your pathetic lives would have more meaning if he did not 'ruin' his legacy? If the man can still play at 45, even if not brilliant who are you to say 'oh Brett you are not as good as you were at 25, it's killing me to watch you struggle!' wah wah wah!

The only reason why this is news and why the press writes down when he breathes is because fans listen and have some opinion about what 'The Favre' should do. I will admit I am a Favre fan whether he plays till his arm falls off or retires yesterday. But damn, will you guys quit the whinning and just wait for opening day already!
Posted Monday June 09, 2008, About: Colts rookie: NFL isn't so tough
What are you guys talking about? Did you read what he said? I do not think he said playing NFL games was not tough. He said 'as far as practice and those types of things'. I think he meant training schedules. Yeah it was not a smart thing to say but for you guys to run with it and apply it to games is just as bad.

Pat Riley is a joke! The NBA should do something about that. Blatantly throwing the season for the top pick. This is pretty pathetic.

What is the deal with people talking of Special teams as if they are merely an extension of the team but are not an actual part of the team. San diego won because overall they were the better team on sunday! I do not understand statements like "If it weren't for their special teams San Diego would have lost" What does that mean?

Don't worry no matter who we pick he'll suck. We just mess the draft year after year.

Y'all act like Shaq went out on a limb and actually said let's get Vince. Am I the only one who sees that Shaq was answering a question? Better yet, how would your hatin' a** have answered that question? Get a grip!
