Carr wasn't run out of town for losing to OSU. He retired gracefully at an appropriate time. Doesn't matter how much he was "encouraged" by the administration. That part of the transition was handled well, but the MVU lawsuit against RR overshadowed what U-M wanted to be a smooth transition.
No way RR leaves in the next 2-3 years. He can't afford the buyout, after paying up to WVU! Plus, he's getting his fair share of top recruits. I think his riskier play-calling will work in the Big Ten, just like it has in the past.
Michigan will be back! The worst season in 50 years (maybe worst ever) definitely hurts now, but in the long run it will help the fan base realize nothing is guaranteed. You gotta work for every yard!
Michigan's track record is spotty with kickers, but better recently. I recall when they generally took a walk-on from the soccer team (and they don't have such a great soccer team!).
Personally, I relish the role-reversal here, with Michigan coming out all fired up to prove something, and State needing to stay discplined and execute in order to put it away, as expected. (Yes, I have to think that the non-BigTen world expects State to win this one).
As usual, T&R is adding hyperbole to stimulate conversation, but I like Graham's comment and attitude here. Regardless or records or expectations, it's a point of pride to win this one. As I like to say, the score at the start of the game will be 0-0, and we'll see where it goes from there!
But Coach is just building for the future. Looking at this week's post-game comments and follow-up, clearly he's expecting THIS year's team to play at the top of their game, even if they were walk-ons or zero-star scholarship kids. The results so far are inconsistent, but the guy is working his butt off to build a program, and that's what we hired him to do. l
Now that I read more thorough coverage of RR's press conference, I'm less concerned than I was from the initial sensationalized divisive media reports. Yeah, he was pissed. Embarrassed by lack of execution, regardless of the score. And the score made it worse! He speaks his mind, though, and I like that. He's very competitive, and I like that too. He knows how to light a fire under the butts of his kids.
The other point in this fairly irresponsible news blurb is about crowds booing. Is that unique to Michigan? I think not, but I will say, Michigan fans can be kinda lame sometimes. The Big House isn't really bigger, they just paint the numbers on the bench closer, and of course we all know Michigan butts are huge, so everyone is kinda cranky squished into the seats. Other than last week, the crowds don't get that rowdy cheering even when things are going well. I mean, they cheer, but not non-stop like some venues. So the booing may actually affect the kids (for better or worse) as much or more as the hot seat from RR!
The question is, how will the team respond? Will that take the negative feedback and get better, or will they start to get defensive and start to crumble as a team? He's putting a LOT of pressure on them!
Ok, nobody tell the recruits! Or else all Big Ten football programs are doomed!
Is that sc part of your epitath for UM actually an acronym, or are you just throwing that in because you think it's funny? There are at least 4 schools that refer to themselves as U of M.
There is only one Michigan. And we know how football works.
RR still has to show it, but so far so good . . . GO BLUE!
The Wisconsin game validates the decision to bring in RR and his "game". No way they win that game with Carr on the sideline. 2nd-half playcalling, and (hopefully not momentary) cessasion of fumbles won it. Not to mention a defense that played at the top of the college game, as expected.
There's too much scrutiny already on recruiting classes, and looking at "commitments" from high-school juniors is another step into the ridiculous. He will decommit when he realizes he doesn't get to go on as many campus visits! Besides, he's like what 16 years old? Didn't you all know some amazing atheletes that peaked in high school?
Actually, the reason I have new-found respect for the Buckeyes is that Coach T is a class act, and deserves it.
PS. who give's a rat's ash about the '93 citrus bowl!
"Top rated recruits" are all overrated, and the rankings of recruiting class don't translate into subsequent AP or BCS rankings at all. Anything in the top 20 or 30 is enough to build a competitive program. We're talking about the difference between 17 year olds and 21 year olds. NOBODY can accurately predict that life change. MANY atheletes (across all sports) peak in high school, then slow down.
