This has to be one of the most ridiculous posts I have ever read on FN. Average salary of $45,000? Players are paid by the owners, not the government. These owners make millions upon millions of dollars from these players. I believe the players should get what they are "owed" in a sense. The only way to stop these astronomical contracts is to stop going to the games. Stop buying hats and t-shirts. Stop buying the products that athletes endorse. Do you actually think this is possible. NO WAY! What if someone wanted to put a limit on your salary? That is not what this country is all about. Some/most of these athletes with gigantic salaries "give back", some do not. It is their choice, not yours...
My apologies.
Most fans know you can't buy championships. The Red Sox tried (Lugo, Crisp, Drew, Gagne) and it was the OTHER players that came through when it mattered most.
As easy as you can say ignorant Yankee fans. I could say 2 World Series Championships in 90 years is not a dynasty. I can also say that 7 years of a drought is not 86 years of a drought.
Relax there big time sports fan! I know I will not be waiting as long as you did to see my team win a championship again. I have seen 6 in my lifetime. And how many have you seen?
I wrote all of this because it is funny. It has nothing to do with the thread. Just blowing off a little steam.
In my opinion the Yankees will get Santana to the playoffs. He will take them to the World Series.
Maybe the Yankees need to get the Dodgers involved to get this done quicker. (j/k)
Jim L. - Teams with a power hitting third baseman do not seem to be interested in trying to get Santana. Whoever "wins" the Twins requirements will still have to spend about 150 million dollars or so on his new contract extension.
I agree the Red Sox won the World Series. I do not agree with they have the upper hand. They have a lot of winning to do before they have the upper hand on the Yankees.
I am a little biased because I am a Yankees fan. I live in New England. I see a whole lot of brand new Red Sox "stuff" (i.e. - hats, shirts etc.) There are a lot of bandwagon fans now. I understand, they win a championship and sell merchandise. Who do you think gets those profits?
Who do you think gets the savings? The fan? Ticket prices just went up 9% at Fenway.
The one thing I do not understand from anyone posting on this site is how much money teams spend. Who cares? Is this something to brag about? It is not my money or anyone else's on this site.

Are you serious?
That might work for Florida who had 400 people in the stands during one game. The YES network is a giant. NESN is a giant.
This may very well be a controversial statement, but could it be that there are too many teams out there?
I know baseball is the American pastime. But businesses fail. If someone opens a hardware store between Lowes and Home Depot, that is not a good business move. I live in Connecticut. We had the Whalers. They did not succeed here. They left. It stinks. I understand. They moved to a better place and are doing well.
We the public have two choices as I see it. 1) Continue paying these ridiculous prices at a ballgame. 2) Stop going to games. They eventually will have to lower ticket prices. Thus in turn they will have to lower the contracts of players.
It would be very complicated. I sort of agree with a cap and minimum. The problem I have with it is as follows.
I work hard (sort of) for my money. I do not want someone telling me how much money I can spend on anything. This should be true for an owner of a baseball team. It all comes down to the desire to put players on the field to compete. Some owners spend a LOT more money than others. I am sort of biased because I am a Yankee fan. I have been a fan for over 35 years.
My apologies for getting off track. After 2 - 3 weeks of the same stuff, I got bored.
A two time Cy Young winner has more value than the Rookie of the Year and a Gold Glove firstbasemen.
