Geeze, you'd thnk that these players would say " Gosh, with the Nation's economy the way it is now, I **don't need** all that money. Give it back to the people that "really" need it." While we're at it, let's 1) cut **everyone's** salary to an average of $45K a year; 2) "Re-negotiate' contracts when a player's 'current' contract runs out; 3) Get rid of 'free-agency,' or at the least when a team 'bids' for a player, that player doesn't get that money - that money goes into a 'pot' to help the Nation's economy; 4) Comments?

This has to be one of the most ridiculous posts I have ever read on FN. Average salary of $45,000? Players are paid by the owners, not the government. These owners make millions upon millions of dollars from these players. I believe the players should get what they are "owed" in a sense. The only way to stop these astronomical contracts is to stop going to the games. Stop buying hats and t-shirts. Stop buying the products that athletes endorse. Do you actually think this is possible. NO WAY! What if someone wanted to put a limit on your salary? That is not what this country is all about. Some/most of these athletes with gigantic salaries "give back", some do not. It is their choice, not yours...

I should also include the Twins fans as well.

My apologies.

I can't believe how long this saga is going on for. Everybody (Sox and Yankees fans) have made excellent points for and against getting Santana. The only real opinion will eventually come from the Twins ownership. Until then...

26 Baby! LMAO!

Most fans know you can't buy championships. The Red Sox tried (Lugo, Crisp, Drew, Gagne) and it was the OTHER players that came through when it mattered most.

As easy as you can say ignorant Yankee fans. I could say 2 World Series Championships in 90 years is not a dynasty. I can also say that 7 years of a drought is not 86 years of a drought.

Relax there big time sports fan! I know I will not be waiting as long as you did to see my team win a championship again. I have seen 6 in my lifetime. And how many have you seen?

I wrote all of this because it is funny. It has nothing to do with the thread. Just blowing off a little steam.

That some pretty funny stuff right there.

ncexnyc - I would LOVE this trade to happen asap. Let the youngsters go!

In my opinion the Yankees will get Santana to the playoffs. He will take them to the World Series.

That sounds like pretty good scenario for the Twins.

Maybe the Yankees need to get the Dodgers involved to get this done quicker. (j/k)

Bruinboy - My comments were taken out of context. I was not trying to make a point of "who cares?". It was the comparison of the cost to negotiate with Santana versus Haren.

Jim L. - Teams with a power hitting third baseman do not seem to be interested in trying to get Santana. Whoever "wins" the Twins requirements will still have to spend about 150 million dollars or so on his new contract extension.

Juice Boy B-12 - Define how it's being spent.

I agree the Red Sox won the World Series. I do not agree with they have the upper hand. They have a lot of winning to do before they have the upper hand on the Yankees.

I am a little biased because I am a Yankees fan. I live in New England. I see a whole lot of brand new Red Sox "stuff" (i.e. - hats, shirts etc.) There are a lot of bandwagon fans now. I understand, they win a championship and sell merchandise. Who do you think gets those profits?

Juice Boy B-12 - If the Yankees panic and overpay for Santana, then overpay him with Zito money, all Theo has to do is go for Dan Haren and the Sox will still be on top, not to mention save a ton of money.

Who do you think gets the savings? The fan? Ticket prices just went up 9% at Fenway.

The one thing I do not understand from anyone posting on this site is how much money teams spend. Who cares? Is this something to brag about? It is not my money or anyone else's on this site.

How about an MLB network and no team is allowed to run its own network? Revenues will be shared among all MLB teams. Afterall, that is where the real disparity lies between the large and small markets.

Are you serious?

That might work for Florida who had 400 people in the stands during one game. The YES network is a giant. NESN is a giant.

There is a luxury tax in place. It just does deter teams that much.

This may very well be a controversial statement, but could it be that there are too many teams out there?

I know baseball is the American pastime. But businesses fail. If someone opens a hardware store between Lowes and Home Depot, that is not a good business move. I live in Connecticut. We had the Whalers. They did not succeed here. They left. It stinks. I understand. They moved to a better place and are doing well.

PR-29 - I disagree that the MLB is a corporation. They a re a governing body. Each team is owned and operated individually. The owners have created this mess. Someone agrees to pay someone else X amount of dollars. These are contracts, which in turn drive up the price when the consumer goes to purchase tickets.

We the public have two choices as I see it. 1) Continue paying these ridiculous prices at a ballgame. 2) Stop going to games. They eventually will have to lower ticket prices. Thus in turn they will have to lower the contracts of players.

Thank you Sulldogg.

It would be very complicated. I sort of agree with a cap and minimum. The problem I have with it is as follows.

I work hard (sort of) for my money. I do not want someone telling me how much money I can spend on anything. This should be true for an owner of a baseball team. It all comes down to the desire to put players on the field to compete. Some owners spend a LOT more money than others. I am sort of biased because I am a Yankee fan. I have been a fan for over 35 years.

My apologies for getting off track. After 2 - 3 weeks of the same stuff, I got bored.

RP-29 - If you are in favor of a salary cap, are you in favor of a salary minimum?

pk812 that is my exact point.

I did not complete my thought-

A two time Cy Young winner has more value than the Rookie of the Year and a Gold Glove firstbasemen.
