Strength of conferences varies by year. The problem is sports writers and pollsters don't seem to understand this. The Big TEn was really bad 2 years ago. Michigan and Ohio State played extremely weak schedules, but everyone thought they were the best 2 teams in the country (except Vegas odss makers). Then they get blown out in bowl games. It happened again last year. Ohio State was a good football team, but not National Champion level and it showed in the game. The were voted to the esteemed position because they are Ohio State, not because they were that good. Is Ohio State an excellent program? Yes Will they win another National Championship someday? Yes Did they deserve to be in the National Championship game the last 2 years?

Based on the schedule, ND can win 9 early games and then all the media will start to talk about how great ND is and that they have turned around the program. Then they will go to a BCS game and great thoroughly beaten by a far superior team as they have consistently been in the past. People just don't learn from the past. (See Bush and Veitnam)
