Posted Wednesday May 14, 2008, About: Bulls want to talk to Avery
Guam Baller pretty much covered everything I was going to say...

Avery Johnson had final say on any and all personnel moves. It's well-documented from any media member that closely follows the team. The product you saw on the floor in the playoffs was Avery's team. 100%.

Avery wanted guys like Juwan Howard, Eddie Jones, and the like... He refused to let Devin Harris and DeSagana Diop play through rough patches. He did the same thing with Marquis Daniels... He simply did not allow young players to make mistakes and play through them. THAT's why Dallas went out and got Jason Kidd. Because Avery didn't want to trust Devin Harris with his offense and let him learn on the fly.

The one thing in here I've agreed with that T-Sizzles said is that you've got to have the right personnel to make moves. The Mavericks tried to address their need for a big last summer trying to get Kevin Garnett. They asked about Pau Gasol two weeks before he was traded to the Lakers, and were told the Grizzlies would settle for nothing less than someone of Josh Howard's caliber... It's not like the Mavs didn't try to fill that void, they simply didn't have the ammo to match Boston's offer for Garnett, and Memphis basically refused to deal with them.

"Avery will make a good coach somewhere. He didn't have the "tools" to do the job in Dallas. It isn't his fault that Cuban has a mancrush on Dampier. Dallas will never be any more than they are, until they shore up the middle."

Oh, how you can't help but love the misinformed... SMH...

Dampier was Avery's call. He told Cuban he knew what it took to motivate Dampier, having played with him at Golden State, and he could get the most out of him...

Avery had first and final say on every personnel move during his time in Dallas. Eddie Jones, Devean George, Dampier, dumping Marquis Daniels to bring in Austin Croshere, trading Harris and Diop... All Avery Johnson. He shopped for the groceries and prepared the meal. He wanted no part of playing and developing younger players.
Posted Tuesday August 14, 2007, About: Rangers to bid on Cubs hurler?
I know a couple of people in the FO, and the Rangers are about to go hard after this dude if he gets to FA. They said they've got it at about 50/50 right now between him signing an extension and him leaving through FA...It's gonna be tough to outbid Hicks for something he really wants (See: Alex Rodriguez)...This dude has as much money to spend as anyone, but the organization has never put it's money in the right places, and it's never been money that turned into any type of success on the field (A-Rod, Chan Ho, Juan Gonzalez, etc...). It's finally looking like they've got some sort of direction, with quite a bit of emerging talent on the farm, young pitchers ready for a crack at the bigs (Hurley and Volquez in 2008, Harrison likely in 2009)...They are more focused now than ever on building from within, thanks in large part to JD, and focusing on filling only glaring needs through free agency, rather than trying to fit square pegs in round holes. They'll overspend money on big time FA's if it's at a position they really think they need an upgrade...

If Zambrano hits the market, you know he's looking for the most cash, and that's where the Rangers only real chance lies. I doubt Santana hits the market (the Rangers FO doesn't think it's likely either), but if he does, they'll be big players there as well.
Posted Saturday August 11, 2007, About: Browns flip coin for starting QB
"welcome to 2007 browns fans. who are you drafting with the number 1-5 pick in the 2008 draft?"

They won't be picking anybody. Dallas will be making that selection for them...

Anyways, this is why Crennell is on the hotseat and will probably lose his job after this year. If you're gonna be a head coach in the National Football League, man up and tell your QBs who is starting and who is coming off the bench. I think we flipped coins to solve QB controversies in junior high...What a joke.
Posted Thursday August 02, 2007, About: Cavs were in the Garnett talks
***The only point I was making is there were better deals on the table and Mckale wanted KG in Boston. ***

Ok, so you admit you made up the whole Deng, Gordon and filler offer from Chicago, so how do you figure this isn't the best deal they could have gotten? Where was Chicago going to find the salaries to even out that part of the deal, without including a long term, high money deal? If you honestly feel a package of Tyrus, Gordon, Noah and 2 picks in the late 20's is a better deal, you're insane, especially when you consider they'd get no big money, expiring deals. Not a one of those dudes is a cornerstone type guy like Jefferson is on his way to being. Lamar Odom being locked up for two more years, with Bynum, Farmar and picks certainly isn't a better package. Dallas offered Harris and Howard, but that isn't a better package either when you take into account Howard's age and the fact Devin Harris wouldn't fit well in a backcourt with Randy Foye...McHale got back the potential lottery pick he traded to Boston for Ricky Davis, along with another late teens/early 20s pick, major cap relief and loads of young talented players...I'd say he did very well for himself in this deal, and he'll look like a genius if Gerald Green turns into the 20 points a night scorer that alot of folks around the league believe he will become.
Posted Wednesday August 01, 2007, About: Gagne price too steep for Yankees
Eh, they demanded more from the Yankees because the Yanks needed bullpen help more than anyone else in the Gagne discussions, and because their past history indicated they often blinked first and gave up more than anyone else in these types of discussions. It's a problem the Yankees created for themselves over the past few years. I've read a few articles of people with neutral perspectives that didn't think asking for Melky straight up was as steep or outrageous as people make it seem, but at the same time felt the Yankees made the right decision by holding on to their younger talents.
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Angels give up on Teixeira
Had to figure the Angels wouldn't be ballsy enough to follow through on a potentially monster deal. Kotchman and Saunders would have been a good pull for the Rangers, and they supposedly wanted someone like Willits or Erick Aybar to finish out the package. Probably can't blame the Angels for pulling out of this one.
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Cubs interested in Texas catcher
Otsuka won't be moving. He's on the DL and apparently will need Tommy John. The Rangers have been pretty adament about not wanting to trade Gagne, although if they could get a prospect the caliber of Pie they may back off. I'd assume the Rangers would probably offer either Benoit, CJ Wilson or Ron Mahay in the deal with Laird.
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Yanks serious about Rangers reliever
LOL. If JD flips Gagne for Melky...
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Cubs interested in Texas catcher
If the Rangers can pull of the deal for Teixeira without giving up a relief pitcher, and then can flip Laird and one RP for PIe...Hell of a deadline for JD and the boys.
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Teixeira-to-Braves deal already done?
^ You really think they'd have ended up giving into the Rangers demands? I never saw that as a possibility, but then again I never really understood where the Sox would put Teixeira, unless they were thinking about moving Youkilis to the OF? Just doesn't make any sense to me for them to make the move, but maybe someone has more insight...
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Teixeira-to-Braves deal already done?
3 Top-flight prospects for a guy that doesn't wanna be here anyways? Damn good deal if true, even if Saltalamacchia is the only one that really pans out. There are a few execs that have said they'd hesitate to trade Salty straight up for Tex because they think that highly of his skill level...Way to go JD, this looks like a winner.
Posted Saturday July 28, 2007, About: Rangers working 3-team blockbuster
Teixeira the only player worth anything? LOL. Gagne is quietly having a GREAT year, having 16 saves in 33 appearances, over a 2:1 K:BB ratio, a 1.05 WHIP and a .192 BAA. Yeah, he's an injury risk, but he, along with 2-3 other Rangers relievers (Joaquin Benoit, CJ Wilson, Ron Mahay) have quite a bit of value around the league.
Posted Friday July 27, 2007, About: Teixeira or bust for Angels?
Maybe my memory escapes me, but when was the last time Stoneman made a big move during the season? I don't see the Rangers having alot of interest in Kotchman, although he does look like a good fit for what Washington likes to do ... For the Rangers to trade with the Angels, if JD were smart about it, they'd demand a major pitching prospect and another top flight position prospect.
Posted Sunday July 15, 2007, About: Mavericks PG wants extension
That trade got the Mavs both Devin Harris and Jerry Stackhouse...I don't even like Harris that much, but it was an absolute steal for Dallas, no other way to look at it.
Posted Friday July 13, 2007, About: Cowboys won't let LB leave
Good move by the Boys in essentially telling him to shut up and play. He's got absolutely no leverage in the situation. If he chooses to sit-out and try to force a move, Dallas already has his replacement, and he kills his value to other teams who aren't going to give big money to a guy his age coming off that type of injury.
Posted Friday July 13, 2007, About: Mavs to wind up with Warrior?
This is a guy Dallas really needs to go after. I've heard Matt Barnes' name thrown around a little too much from the Dallas media, and I really feel Pietrus would be a far better fit, and is quite frankly a much better player as well.
Posted Friday July 13, 2007, About: L.A. teams eyeing Big Tex
Just get rid of this idiot already. He's going to command FAR more money than he's worth, he's become a cancer in the clubhouse over the last two years, and he's made it abundantly clear doesn't want to be in Texas and will not re-sign with the team after this deal is up. Trade him now while teams are willing to make serious offers, rather than wait and let him walk for the draft picks, which we'd inevitably waste on high school pitchers we aren't capable of developing anyways. Damn it Jon, do something right and take players another team has already molded into major league ready products.
Posted Friday July 13, 2007, About: Will MLB reject Cuban bid?
Dear Cuban,

Monopolize the Dallas market and just buy the Rangers from Tom Hicks.

Thanks.
