Phil Leach

Ok, a little about me and my interests. Completed my degree in history from the University of Warwick in the UK. Enjoying some free time before the inevitable job hunt begins. I first got into American sports over a decade ago, with my main interest being basketball. Nowadays i follow all major US sports, but baseball is my passion and the Yankees are my team. I also follow the Buffalo Bills, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Bulls. My most admired player is Derek Jeter, for his sportsmanship, leadership and unrivalled will to win. My sporting interests extend far beyond America however. I particularly enjoy tennis and football (soccer), among a host of other global sports i follow.

So while the established order seemingly continues…

The coming fortnight is a momentous one for tennis. It will bear witness to the crowning of not one but two new world number ones. To the casual observer, this may not seem such an extraordinary event. In a number of sports the world rankings shift constantly, and for some sportsmen and women their time spent at the pinnacle of their chosen profession is all too brief. This is not the case in tennis. Sure positions interchange frequently in the lower echelons of the rankings, but at the summit there has been a remarkable degree of continuity. Roger Federer has enjoyed a four and a…

The Beijing Olympics are now on the horizon, and while most armchair sports fans will probably be salivating over track and field athletics or glued to the events in the pool, an equally intriguing battle awaits at the new Olympic and Paralympic Tennis Centre. No, i don't mean the tussle between the troika of dominant players on the men's side. I am referring to the wide open competition for the gold medal amongst the world's leading female players. The uncertainty and often downright fragility of some of the WTA tour's leading lights guarantees compelling and sometimes…
